My January Beauty Product Favorites (And Not So Favorite)

January Beauty Product Favorites
First round up of 2016! I went on a bit of a bender beauty shopping wise this month lol. I ran out of some beloved products so I took that opportunity to try some items that have been on my list. I also received quite the lovely batch of beauty products from Santa for Christmas so I've been enjoying those.

January Skirt Challenge

I am very much a tomboy. I feel most comfortable in a t-shirt and jeans. But from time to time a skirt catches my eye. I especially love a maxi in the summer. Doing some closet cleaning over the holiday break I noticed I had amassed quite the collection of skirts but hardly ever wear them. So I challenged myself to rock them... for the month of January (real smart Kim!). I kept it to strictly "winter appropriate" skirts though.

My Favorite People to Follow on Snapchat

With the White House joining, Snapchat has officially made it! My first time opening the app, it definitely overwhelmed me and I had no patience to try a new app. Then they came to my agency and they gave us quick tips and I found myself instantly enamored. So in just 2 months, I went from being completely baffled by Snapchat to it being the first app I open up in the morning (over Twitter, which is saying something!). On my company's podcast, Tuesdays with Toni, she highlighted the real appeal of Snapchat "it's the anti-Instagram" which has become so fake looking. It's so staged, curated which can be great but it feels inauthentic where Snapchat is more "real" and unfiltered (pun intended). Here are some people I've enjoyed following:

Drugstore Beauty Haul Reviews: L'Oreal & Maybelline

As you may have seen on Snapchat, I went on a beauty haul binger earlier this month. I've slowly been testing and trying these products. Now I'm here to report back my thoughts:

New Year, New Name!

I've been wanting to update my blog's name for quite some time. After 6 years, I felt I had outgrown "I Have A Degree In This!" I started it in college with the goal of showing fashionistas had intelligent opinions to share and that fashion wasn't just about labels but creativity. Since then I've graduated NYU with a Masters and turned 30 so I feel like the blog needs to be more representative of where I am today. Petite in the City allows me to share more of my opinions on everything outside of fashion as well as my thoughts on trends in the fashion world because those aren't going away. Thanks for reading all these years and cheers to a new year and a new name!

P.S. Still working out the kinks so bear with me!

January TV Reviews

There's been a mix of shows, TV movies and mini-series this month. First off, congrats to Rachel Bloom of Crazy Ex Girlfriend on her Golden Globe! So glad this weird show is getting recognized lol. This month I'm watching my usual - Shameless and Younger TV. Both just got picked up for another season so I'll be watching more - yey! Here are the new shows I tuned into this month:

My January Birchbox

First Birchbox of 2016! I missed out on the Korean curated beauty (boo!) so I got the traditional box. It came with stickers so you could fill in the front of the box "2016: The Year of __." But onto the beauty products! Here's what I received:

5 Beauty Samples I Loved So Much I Repurchased: take 2
You guys enjoyed the first edition of this post so I thought I'd update ya with a take 2. As a blogger, I have the privilege of sampling lots of products and I also subscribe to boxes where I get samples. I try to share my reviews of all the products and round-up my favorites. But just in case you were curious about the products I really enjoyed that I was willing to spend my own hard earned cash on repurchasing it, here ya go. So without further adieu, here are the beauty samples I enjoyed so much I repurchased:

Best Highlighters for Fair Skin

Having fair skin has it's pros and cons. One downside is that highlighters can either be too dark or make you look paler. Highlighters on the lighter scale can be straight up white, which you don't want. POPSUGAR rounded up their picks for best highlighters for pale skin and gave me some ideas for ones I need to try. Some I had already tried. Here are my picks for best highlighters for pale skin:

Best and Worst Dressed at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards

Award season is here! Ricky Gervais was back to wreak havoc again at the Golden Globes. I have to say I was fairly underwhelmed by the dresses. There were of course beautiful looks and the young fashionistas showed up. However, no one was undeniably the best dressed there.

My January Julep Maven Box

This month's Julep Maven box theme was Fresh Look for ringing in the new year. "No matter what you resolve to do in the new year, hydration should always be a priority. In our January collection you'll find moisturizing lip crayons in right-now hues, and a luxe hydrating creme that's formulated for anywhere your skin wants it." I selected Modern Beauty since I wasn't a big fan of the polishes. Here's what I received:

Review: PÜR’s Perfecting Brow Powder

I'm a firm believer that eyebrows really make a face. I love me a bold brow so I was excited when PÜR sent me their new Perfecting Brow Powder. It's an innovative new product that glides on like a liquid but dries like a powder. I was up for the challenge to step up my brow game!

My Picks for What's In & What's Out

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of "Hot" or "Not" trend lists in magazines. Trends come and go so obviously there will be things not in style. However, I've found myself leaning away from certain trends that I've clung onto for a long time. It's the New Year so you may be looking for some trends to check out for yourself. So these are my picks for myself of what's been in and out:
