Movie Review: Foxcatcher

Monday afternoon my boss treated us to a movie! We went to see Foxcatcher starring Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum. Two actors not known for their serious roles. Long story short: They are both going to get Oscar nominations.

The movie is loosely based on a true story. "The greatest Olympic Wrestling Champion brother team joins Team Foxcatcher lead by multimillionaire sponsor John E. du Pont as they train for the 1988 games in Seoul - a union that leads to unlikely circumstances." Mark Ruffalo plays the older brother, Dave (also a great performance) and Channing Tatum is the younger brother, Mark, living in his shadow even though they both won gold medals. Dave has gone onto to find a steady job and has a family meanwhile Mark is barely getting by. That is until he gets a call from du Pont billionaire John.

The concept that a multimillionaire wants to invite a bunch of younger men with athletic bodies to his compound to train is super odd; however, not unprecedented. We've heard similar stories recently from the NFL and NBA (aka Donald Sterling). When you have an obscene amount of money, what is left? People. du Pont's mother breeds prize winning horses and there are many similarities between the way she trains/observes her horses and du Pont's habits training the wrestlers. It will make you uneasy. Carrell will haunt you. I got chills.

The movie is nearly 2 1/2 hours and is very quiet. There are a lot of subtleties. There's not much dialogue so you have to look for the subtle clues about the change in characters which is mostly through their appearance. I would have preferred to have seen this movie at home because a) I'd be on a comfy couch and b) I wouldn't have to deal with other people's noises interrupting. It did take away a bit. It would probably be more enjoyed at home. Otherwise, it's a really great film. The fact there is such little dialogue yet powerful performances says a lot about Carrell's and Tatum's choices in portraying these characters.

P.S. Fun fact: We spotted Paul McCartney! Celebs never look like what I expect lol so we all took 5 minutes to see if it was really him.

What movies have you seen recently?

  1. @Jenn it was really great performances but for me the movie theater experience made it difficult to enjoy. Let me know if you do watch it!

  2. I can't believe you saw Sir Paul! That's awesome. I really want to see this movie. Some people have loved it and some have hated it. Mixed reviews always make me want to see it more than a well-loved movie.

  3. @Christina it wasn't as exciting because we weren't sure it was him lol

I'll have to read what the bad reviews said. Definitely watch it before the Oscars :)

We all have opinions... I want to hear yours!
