You Can Be Smart And Like Fashion

In the March issue of ELLE there was an article titled "Why Can't A Smart Woman Love Fashion?" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (pictured above). It was exactly the reason I started this blog. So many people said I wouldn't be taken seriously because I liked fashion. I couldn't disagree more. As Bill Cunningham said in his documentary,

"Fashion is the armor to survive everyday life."

To me, it has been a way to express myself to others before they made a judgment of you. Fashion has historically and currently identifies people's roles in society. Chimamanda talks about how you identified someone's status in Nigeria by what they were wearing. Historically, rulers were easily distinguishable by head garments they wore and the rich covered themselves in jewels to show off their wealth. A similar thing happens today. You can usually tell who the boss is in the room because they have the nicest suit and most expensive accessories on.

She said as she got older she gained more confidence to wear what she wanted. Growing up we always try to fit in and wear what others are wearing. I get it. As a teenager, you don't want to stand out. But don't let it last forever. Finding personal style is like finding your identity. It's a long journey (I'm still on mine) but once you know it, you will command the room.

One of my heroes, Cindy Gallop, said she wears python pants to meetings (usually all men) to send a message. It immediately gets everyone's attention. I definitely say don't shy away from it. I don't like uniformity. It makes the world boring. Personally, I enjoy skimming other fashion blogs with style I would never wear. Or admiring the street style fashion around the globe. It's great to see them expressing their individuality. I don't have to want to wear it to admire it. As Oscar Wilde so brilliantly said, "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken."

Have you ever found yourself not being taken seriously because of your fashion choices?

  7. I read this article when you posted it on fb and loveddddd it. I was def. that girl in college that was always dressed up. I didn't really care for sweats (unless I was hungover lol). Even still on my more casual days I'm still pretty "dressy". I don't know there is just something about getting dressed that I enjoy.

  9. I think I've always loved fashion for what it is...art. There's always a way to interpret it and make it your own and that's what's so wonderful about it. I don't take it too seriously but I do love to follow it. It should be fun!
