My December Beauty Product Favorites

Can't believe 2014 is almost over! The end of another month needs means another round up. During major changes in the season you should switch up your beauty routine. East Coast winters suck the moisture out of your skin faster than you can say "winter is coming!" You can't slap on enough serums, moisturizers, lotions, etc. Here are the new products I tried and loved this month:

Christmas Weekend Recap

I'm back! I have somewhat safely returned back from my whirlwind week in California. Let's just say it starts with me losing a bag and ends with me getting a cold. Before even getting on the plane, the wheel of my bag broke. I decided to check it so I wouldn't have to drag it through the airport. Bad idea. There was no bag when I arrived. (P.S. My laptop was in it). I filed a claim and United said it may be on the next flight out. I frantically checked my phone and nothing. Went to bed seriously thinking I'd never see my bag again. Restless, I woke up at 2am to see an email that my bag was out to be delivered. THANKFULLY by 3:30am my bag was at the door laptop and all. That's all I wanted for Christmas. My Dad said it restored his faith in humanity lol.

Merry Christmas!

For those who celebrate - Merry Christmas! There's nothing like ripping wrapping paper. I think I did a pretty damn good job with gifts this year (as always lol). Can't wait to see everyone unwrap their gifts and see their reactions. Hope "Santa" brought you all the goodies on your list and you're having a great day.

Cali Here I Come!

Today I'm flying to southern California for the holidays to see my sister and her family. Keep me in your thoughts as I try to survive holiday travel. Always a nightmare. Blogging will continue so hopefully you won't miss me too much!

Final Monday Morning Gossip

It's true. Some of you may have seen our email this weekend but I'm sad to say today will be the last Monday Morning Gossip. Somebody hold me. I was honored to co-host with Leeann under a new name. However, MMG has run it's course and it has been too much to maintain for us with our busy lives. MMG has afforded me the opportunity to get to know some new bloggers and I even got the chance to meet some of you incredible people in person including Leeann whom I've known in the blogosphere for several years. We hope you all continue to support each other's blogs and stay in touch with us after today. We're so proud at what an awesome, supportive community MMG has become and that's all thanks to you. So with that said... this week's (and every week's) Featured Blogger is...

My Holiday Nails

My first attempt doing my nails for my company's holiday nails were wrecked once I hopped in the shower. So I went to Plan B - add glitter! I painted them in a festive red and green with some gold microglitter. I may change them to #5 (below) for next week #nailartproblems.

If you're looking for holiday nail inspiration, here are some other holiday nails I've done:

Battle of the Lip Balms: Teadora vs Nuxe

I'm a major lip product junkie. Currently I have about 5 lip balms in my purse (and that's on the low end). I feel like I've tried everything when it comes to healing chapped lips. I'm always excited when I see a lip product in one of my subscription boxes because I'm always down to try a new one. When I received these products I thought they were fairly similar so I thought I'd do a comparison.

Movie Review: Foxcatcher

Monday afternoon my boss treated us to a movie! We went to see Foxcatcher starring Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum. Two actors not known for their serious roles. Long story short: They are both going to get Oscar nominations.

My December Birchbox

This month's Birchbox theme was Decked Out. "... we find it hard to feel anything but buoyant this time of year. There's the anticipation of a pile of brightly wrapped presents, the glow of a family gathering, and of course the fizz of excitement before a big soiree." This month's box featured a $10 gift card from GAP which was appreciated. Here's what I received:

MMG: Guilty Pleasures

This weekend was pretty low key. Saturday I met up with my coworker, Margo, for brunch at Lexington Brass. She leaves in a couple days to go back to Denver so we wanted to say our goodbyes. She's new to NYC so wanted to see my 'hood so we wandered around 5th Avenue. I took her to her first Sephora store, which of course was overwhelming lol, and then we stopped by the Rockefeller Christmas Tree which was a nightmare. Fun times in Midtown.

DIY Holiday Wrapping Ideas

I have been getting into the crafting spirit this holiday season. I always try to reuse and recycle items I already have before buying anything such as using my beauty boxes. In case you're still looking for some wrapping inspiration or affordable ways to jazz up your gifts, I thought I'd share my ideas with you:

December 11, 2014

Limited Edition Holiday GLOSSYBOX

I received the Limited Edition Holiday GLOSSYBOX which was a gorgeous velvet red box with gold details. It featured 7 full-sized products + a perfume spray valued at over $140. It might be my favorite GLOSSYBOX yet! Here's what was inside:

Reppin' B.A.D. Girl For Life

Kim looking contemplative

I took advantage of MyTee B.A.D.'s Cyber Monday sale. Everything was 50% off! They released their new winter collection and of course I wanted everything. If you read this blog often enough you've probably seen me rocking MTB. B.A.D. stands for Beautiful, Authentic, Determined (despite what men on the streets think). "We are more than just a fashion brand; we are movement and our mission is to help women discover their inner B.A.D. Girl. Our girl is confident, strong-willed, ambitious and has a killer sense of style. She is also free spirited and kind, but doesn't allow anyone to put her down." How can you not get behind that?!

My December Julep Maven Box

For my Julep Maven box this month I selected the Holiday Soirée box. It featured a mix of beauty products and polishes. The collection this month was The Countdown collection but nothing really caught my eye. Here's what I received:

MMG: Final Final.

This weekend I pretty told everyone not to disturb me because I needed to focus on finishing my final project. But of course I procrastinated. I met up with Alex for brunch at Banc Cafe. It was all glammed out for the holidays. Put me in a festive mood. Afterwards, I stopped in Duane Reade to pick up some holiday wrapping supplies but of course I couldn't pass up the beauty aisles lol. Then I proceeded to wrap gifts while listening to Christmas music. Tisk tisk.

Book Review: "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler

Let me just say right off the bat - I love Amy Poehler. So I had high expectations for her memoir, Yes Please. I was sadly disappointed. A book that I thought I would finish in two short sittings like Tina Fey's Bossypants instead took me all month. Tina Fey's 272 page book felt like a feather compared to Amy's 329 page book. Thankfully it was broken up by pictures and fun quotes. It hops all over the place and I often found it tedious to read at times (confession: I skipped some chapters). As Dwight Garner said in his New York Times review "her heart wasn't in it."

Gift Guide: Beauty Edition

The holidays are upon us and everyone is feverishly searching for the perfect for everyone on their list - I know I am! I've rounded up some of my picks for the beauty lover on your list whether that's your mom, aunt, sister, best friend or you:

Drugstore Dupe: J.Cat Beauty Lip Paint vs OCC

My co-worker gave me her J.Cat Wonder Lip Paint from her ipsy bag and immediately I recalled the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar I received in my Harper's BAZAAR GLOSSYBOX. When I swatched them next to each other, it was almost a perfect match!

My Favorite Beauty Products $5 And Under

All month long I've been rounding up my favorite beauty products at different price points. Now I conclude with the $5 and under products. Cheap doesn't always have to mean poor quality. These products prove just that point!

MMG: Thanksgiving Recap

My cousin Erin & I wearing the same outfit, even down to the combat boots (not pictured) // My place setting was easily identifiable // Delicious vegan pumpkin pie!
Bright and early Thursday morning I headed down to Jersey. There was a lot of hub bub about snow so I think it scared most people away Wednesday night. Thursday we hit no traffic leaving or coming back - Thanksgiving miracle! It would be my first successful vegan Thanksgiving. You may recall last year I cheated a little. This year, my cousin Erin (pictured above wearing matching outfits) who is vegetarian, made a lentil loaf. My mom graciously made several vegan items for me so I had my own personal menu. The vegan pumpkin pie was exceptionally delicious (as you can see, I ate a piece before I bothered to snap a pic lol). Now I have all these leftovers to myself...

Shop Small Business Saturday

While you may have enjoyed the Black Friday frenzy, don't forget your local small businesses! Small Business Saturday is an important reminder that our economy and local communities thrive when these stores do. Some small businesses I'm shopping are:

Happy Thanksgiving!

For those who celebrate today, I hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'll be joining my family in Jersey for the festivities where I'll definitely eat too much. Stay tuned for a full recap for Monday Morning Gossip!

My November Beauty Product Favorites (And Not So Favorite)

This is going to be a combo since October I didn't have enough to round up. These are the products I have been enjoying (and not enjoying so much) lately:

This month's GLOSSYBOX featured an exclusive collaboration with OPI. It's a pink modeled after the color of the GLOSSYBOX. Very creative. Here's what I received:

MMG: Cold Season Is Here

This was pretty much me all weekend

Long story short this weekend - I was sick. It's been going around the office. Friday I worked from home. Saturday I tried to convince myself that I wasn't sick to get a few errands done but then Sunday I barely got out of bed. I'm still stuffed and have a bit of a sore throat but at least I have energy again. Thankful it's a short week this week. But onto happier topics...

My Favorite Beauty Products $10 And Under

Third edition! Each week this month I'm breaking down my favorite beauty products at different price points. We're now entering the more "reasonable" prices with products ranging from $10-5 dollars. Hope you find something new to try:

Julep's Go Big Volumizing Mascara was supposed to be in our Maven boxes this month but Julep was backordered. It finally arrived and thought I would share my thoughts. Julep claims:

Today I'm over on Midtown Girl discussing the dread us single ladies feel when we go home for the holidays. Chime in!

My November Birchbox

The theme of this month's Birchbox is Giving (of course). "November isn't just about pumpkin pie and holiday shopping... It's also about giving back. This month we're partnering with (RED) to raise money and awareness for the global fight against AIDS." Loved the concept and the packaging was also cute! Here's what I received:

MMG: In A Nutshell

Thursday I got my haircut. Got my winter bangs. Went a little crazy during the Veteran's Day sales but I did get a start on my holiday shopping. Kendrick Lamar killed it on SNL. Watched Chelsea Peretti's comedy special on Netflix. Very hilarious and offbeat. Got a Starbucks. Was overwhelmed by all the holiday cheer. Froze my butt off since the high was 40 degrees all weekend. And that's my weekend in a nutshell.

My Favorite Beauty Products $20 And Under

Second edition! Each week this month I'm breaking down my favorite beauty products at different price points. We're now entering the more "reasonable" prices with products ranging from $20-10 dollars. Definitely share some of your favorites in the comments below!

Why I'm A Tea Drinker

Tea has always been important in my life. We have tea time in our family. The women in my family drink tea several times a day. Drinking tea is how we deal with many things lol. Tea time had a social component but as I've gotten older, it also has health benefits.

November 10, 2014

MMG: Turning Over A New Leaf

... or a new closet. This weekend I did what all us East Coasters have to do when the temperature drops - clean out our closet. I packed away my light summer clothes and pulled out my big bulky sweaters. In the process I also was able to fill two shopping bags of Goodwill donations. Feeling good! I also watched Clueless so I included this photo.

November 7, 2014

My Favorite Beauty Products $40 And Under

I have tried A LOT of beauty products. At the end of each month, I try round up my favorites to give you a sense of what I enjoyed. But there also staples that I have in rotation in my beauty routine. I thought I'd highlight them all month long and break it down by price. I know sometimes when I feature an item that is not in drugstore prices you gasp but some things are worth investing in - a good beauty routine is one of them. (Don't worry by the end of the month the items will get cheaper) But hear me out about these products!

Book Review: #Newsfail

Image via

The hosts of my favorite podcast, Citizen Radio, Jamie Kilstein and Allison Kilkenny wrote a book! They are a listener supported podcast and I have been supporting them for 3 years so I feel a little like a proud momma. The full title - #Newsfail: Climate Change, Feminism, Gun Control, and Other Fun Stuff We Talk About Because Nobody Else Will - sums it up. They cover major topics that mainstream media won't (or only for a brief moment when there's a hot story around it). Topics they frequently cover on their podcast.

Channeling My Inner Cher Horowitz

I've had my eye on the throwback trend of layering a cropped sweater over a top a la Clueless. When I spotted this Elie Tahari for Kohl's sweater I immediately thought of Cher Horowitz. When it was delivered, I wasn't a fan of the length of the sheer blouse attached so I ripped it off (eek!). I layered it over a white button up and some jeans with a statement necklace for a work appropriate look. I definitely can see wearing this cropped sweater for a more relaxed weekend look as well. You'll be seeing more of this sweater:

My November Julep Maven Box

This month's Julep Maven box was all about besties - best friends and giving thanks. I selected the Classic With A Twist box because the colors seemed like ones I didn't have. Julep notified us ahead of time that the mascara was on backorder (womp womp). So here's what I received:

November 3, 2014

MMG: Cold November Rain

Cue Guns 'n Rose. It's been cold and rainy here in NYC. Boo! Can't believe it's November and the holidays are just around the corner. I actually have something to share for my weekend recap - REJOICE! Friday night Alex and Nnenna came over for a low-key Halloween movie night. We watched Beetlejuice and Capser while pigging out. I wore my Popbasic Forever dress and Lorde's Pure Heroine MAC lipstick for a very goth look.

October 31, 2014

My Halloween Mani

Excuse my dried out cuticles

I decided to go with a haunting manicure for this Halloween. I used Kiss's Nail Art Set in Black Magic from their Disney Good vs Evil collection (obviously... I chose the Evil one.) For $10 you get an amazing of nail art goodness including glitter, stones, brushes and tape. I layered the black/purple glitter on top of Julep's Kim (because of course) and added Evil to the thumbnail.

#DatingGirl: Who Should I Date? Everyone Has An Opinion

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Bodysuits

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Bodysuits
Featuring: Jamaika String Bodysuit via Wolford $195 // Fine Tricot Bodysuit via American Apparel $40

Adding to the list of '90s trends I'm craving - bodysuits. Coming from the '80s where workout wear was the norm, the bodysuit transitioned from Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical" to the off-duty look of supermodels in mom jeans like Cindy Crawford's Pepsi commercial.

MMG: (Insert Title Here)

Image via
I should start calling these posts "Kim watches a lot of TV." The weekend is really my time to catch up on my shows so that's mostly what I have to talk about (sorry!). Gilmore Girls was released on Netflix earlier this month and I've been binge watching. Finished re-watching Season 1. Really miss the show. The rest of the weekend was the usual. I did shop for my Halloween outfit though because my office decided we should all dress up. Pressure's on!

5 Halloween Nail Art Ideas

It feels like every holiday, ever year, it's a struggle to decide what to paint my nails. I have only have 10 fingers! The nail art enthusiast struggle. I'm seeing so many wonderful ideas for Halloween nails that I'm having trouble to deciding. As I try to decide what I'm going to do for my nails, thought I'd round up past manicures and perhaps inspire you:

Year of Veganism

I like to think of this blog as a personal one so I like to step away from the fashion to discuss personal things. I'd like to talk about my journey towards veganism as you may be considering it yourself. I know reading other people's journeys helped me. For those who may be not be aware, a vegan is someone who does not eat any animal products (meat and dairy). It may sound like an impossible task but it's actually easier to than you may think. My journey began unconsciously. I didn't say "Today I'm going to be a vegan!" However, it is something I've wanted to do but thought it was too difficult to do it. It was even on my list of 26 Things To Do By 27. 29 is close enough, right?

October 21, 2014

This month's GLOSSYBOX was centered around date night. They sent us GLOSSYBOX bloggers a few items in advanced, which I have been enjoying. They included a lot of full-sized products which is always appreciated. Here's what I received:

October 20, 2014

MMG: Off-Broadway Shows & Halloween Candy

This final class is going to be the death of me. Not to be dramatic but it's a lot of work let alone having a full-time job. I really just wanted to not think about it because I'm mentally exhausted. Friday night I came home to my copy of #Newsfail. The authors are from my favorite podcast, Citizen Radio. They're listen supported (i.e. no sponsors) and I've been supporting the podcast for 4 years so it's great to see them achieve such success. Stay tuned for a full review! Sunday I took a break from homework to get crafty and make Halloween goodie boxes for my nephews since Auntie Kim is on the other side of the country.

My Trick For Making Mascara Last Day All

A pet peeve for all women is their mascara flaking and smudging by the end of the day. I know I struggled with this for awhile. I played with mascaras and tricks and finally settled on a routine that works for me. I think part of it is the formula of the mascara you choose and part the application. As mascara can be very personal and every woman has a formula that works for her, I'm going to talk about application. Here's what I do:

5 Beauty Products Benefitting Breast Cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We all see the pink ribbons and pink limited edition products benefitting the cause, but we can't forget to take steps to protect ourselves. 1 in 8 US women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. During NBCAM, everyone is encouraged to educate themselves about symptoms and how to detect it early. Educate yourself! Here are five beauty products benefitting the cause:
