My October Julep Maven Box

October's Julep Maven Box was titled the Rebel Set - "Shift your gears and reveal another side of you." It was very noir and featured latex, which can definitely reveal another side of you (if you catch my drift). I once again selected the Modern Beauty box because a lot of the polish colors are repeating for me and I like trying the new beauty products. But not to miss out on Halloween, they included some candy corn. Here's what I received:

Mask Noir (2.5 oz $32)
- Kajal Eye Glider & Sharpener $22
- Add-on: Cleopatra $14
- Extra: Candy corn
Don't let the white packaging fool you. This is a black mask! "A peel-off mask of gentle kaolin clay and black volcanic ash. Black volcanic ash boasts anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial peptides. Enriched with Julep’s proprietary Power Cell Complex™, a trio of skin-boosting superstars: Rosehip seed oil – a nourishing oil (and natural source of vitamins A and C) that helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and post-acne marks. Contains natural fatty acids that bond moisture to skin; Malvaceae Lipid Extract™ – a lipid complex that provides immediate and long-lasting hydration and works to rebuild skin structure from the inside out; Green coffee bean oil – a natural anti-inflammatory that promotes cell turnover." It was full on clay (i.e. super thick!). I know this sounds weird but it was the most difficult mask to apply. It was so thick it kept gooping up on my hand and the clay would dry really fast. But my skin did feel soft and refreshed after using.
"Two intensely pigmented colors—carbon black and brown shimmer—that glide on smoothly and blend like a dream." As you can see by the swatch on my hand, it smudges very easily. I did like that a sharpener is included and the colors work well for blue eyes.

I also added on Cleopatra, which is a black latex crème. I was really intrigued by the idea of latex nail polish and wanted to know how it would look. I thought it would look different. It just looks like a matte black creme polish to me. A bit of a let down.

Which Julep Maven Box did you select this month?

  1. I skipped this month, but Cleopatra was one of the polishes I was interested in. That's the blackest mask I've ever seen!

  5. Haha no you can't even! It comes with a light, pastel-colored polish that's meant to be used as "the chalk", but it's all just clever marketing.

  6. That mask looks pretty interesting! I know rosehip seed oil is SO good for our skin. :)
Too bad about the polish. I'd been seeing "latex" polishes around and wondered how they were different! Not so much I guess!

  8. I love Cleopatra. I skipped this months box, but went in to the parlor for a mani and chose it. I don't know why it's described as latex. The tech said it's just a description for matte black. Why not just say that then? I still really love it. I've never used a matte before and think it's my new favorite thing!

  9. The mask looks interesting - how much does it retail for? I would think with volcanic ash it'd be pricey. I need to try out a peeling mask sometime soon though. And such a bummer about the black latex polish :(
