3 of My Childhood Style Icons

Growing up in the late '80s and early '90s there was quite an array of fashion to choose from. I was always the quirky one in the family with my fashion sense always throwing my family for a loop with Christmas requests. So growing up there were several "icons" I looked up to, mostly from TV, that I'm happy to say have grown up to still continue being beautiful women in their own right. It's also been fun to see a lot of these styles come back. In no order...

1. Punky Brewster. I related to her on so many levels. Sassy, great style, quick with comeback. She was Kim to a tee. How can we forget the mismatched Converse? I still want to rock that look. Now Soleil Moon Frye (that's her name folks) has grown up to continue being an awesome person and hows modern moms that they don't have sacrifice style.
2. Wednesday Addams. I loved the Addams family movies with Christina Ricci as Wednesday. This was probably how many people saw me in high school - had no interest being there and wore a lot of black. I still love black and skulls to this day so Wednesday will probably be forever a style icon to me. She also one of my big forehead icons.

3. Lisa Bonet. Everything about her is cool... even today. Her daughter with Lenny Kravitz is cool. Could I get some of that?! In the opening credits of The Cosby Show, I love her style but I know I could never pull it off. Her style so embodied '90s and I love looking back on some of the looks and seeing how fashionistas today are still emulating them.

Who were some of your style icons growing up?

  1. Haha, someone came up to me at work on Monday and asked if Wednesday Addams was a style icon of mine. They don't know how much of a compliment that was to me :)

  2. I love Christina Ricci, but I didn't realize who she was and become a fan until Now and Then (when my four friends each identified with one character in the movie, and I was Roberta). But yeah, she's awesome!

I had no idea Zoe Kravitz was Lisa Bonet's daughter, but that makes sense now. They both have that cool-girl style.

  10. @Rebekah B lol I love Now & Then! Although I always cry so I don't watch it that much (but do own it). Oooh yeah. She thankfully passed on her cool genes. Wish she was more in the spotlight so I could see her cool style #selfish
