3 of My Childhood Style Icons

Growing up in the late '80s and early '90s there was quite an array of fashion to choose from. I was always the quirky one in the family with my fashion sense always throwing my family for a loop with Christmas requests. So growing up there were several "icons" I looked up to, mostly from TV, that I'm happy to say have grown up to still continue being beautiful women in their own right. It's also been fun to see a lot of these styles come back. In no order...

My CVS Beauty Haul + Reviews

I don't know about you but whenever I'm in the beauty section I tend to go overboard and always leave with more items then I intended on buying. About a week ago I shared with you my CVS beauty haul, which was a perfect example. Went into the store to buy one item and left with 8 (including 2 nail polishes which were not necessary lol). Thankfully I'm a Beauty Club member so I save money every time I shop with ExtraBucks Rewards. For every $50 spent on qualifying beauty products, I earn $5 in ExtraBucks Rewards to spend on any item in the store. I love trying new products so I've been busy testing them all out. Here's what I picked up:

Weekend Recap: Early Birthday Celebrations

Chicken tacos // Nicole & I // Pastries // MyTee BAD goodies

Since I'm usually in California celebrating my actual birthday with my nephew, a tradition has begun to celebrate a weekend early with my New York friends. So this past Saturday Alex, Laura and Nicole joined me at Yuca Bar & Cantina for some delicious Latin food. I enjoyed some chicken tacos. Then we continued the festivities at Veniero’s CafĂ© for some tea and Italian pastries (I party hard folks...). The Luxury Spot breaks down what our food cravings mean - apparently I need to eat more broccoli and kale. FYI we were bad bloggers and didn't really take a lot of pics throughout the night. Nicole got me some awesome MyTee BAD merch including this t-shirt I love, it says "Mo Money, Mo Power, Mo Shoes."

3 Tricks to Recovering Chipped Nails

My mani this week

I'm sad to report to you ladies but there's no real practical way to keep your nails from chipping. Buy all the Seche Vite you want ladies... it's going to happen. I personally see it as an opportunity to freshen up your mani. Here are my tricks for keeping your mani lasting way past those chips:

4 Years of Confessions

It's the 4 year anniversary of my blog (my first post was on July 25th, 2009) and I always try to find an interesting way to sum up all the posts. I realized that while this blog may have started out just to show my writing samples for jobs, it has now turned into a full on personal expression for me. I often find myself confessing things to you and thankfully you all have been wonderfully kind in your responses. Who knows what I'll be confessing on this blog in the next 4 years but hopefully you'll all stick with me! Here are some of the things I've bared in the past four years:

BB Cream Files: Elizabeth Arden

My love of BB creams is never ending. Since rounding up my picks for best and worst, I've still tried more if you can believe it! In my Sunkissed VoxBox I tried Olay's Fresh Effects BB Cream! Skin Perfecting Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15. My latest BB cream trial is from Elizabeth Arden. Their Visible Difference Multi-Targeted BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is an all-in-one that instantly hydrates, brightens, primes and protects your skin for a flawless finish. It is $32 for 1 oz.

My July Conscious Box

My Conscious Box subscription is coming to a close. I just realized that they do have a theme! This month's theme is "Nature's Fireworks." I have to say I was fairly disappointed with this month's box. Last month's box was great so I guess it was hard to top it. However, I received several repeat products, multiple tea products (its the middle of July where it's reached 100+ degrees here in NYC!) as well as lubricant (lol um no thanks). Here are some of the items I received (after discarding those unwanted items):

Weekend Recap: Heat Wave Edition

It reached record temperatures in the city towards the end of the week. It would be 100 degrees + humidity and the city doesn't get much of a breeze. But that didn't keep people from going outside! Friday my parents came into the city. My mom and I tried out Dry Bar. If you don't know... it's a salon where they only do blowouts or style your hair. No cuts or coloring. I've always wanted to try one since I barely put any effort into my hair. Your appointments are supposed to be approximately 35 minutes long since they're only shampooing and blow drying your hair. However, my appointment was over an hour. I have a lot of hair lol. This is why I hardly ever blow out my hair myself. But I love how my hair turned out. I'm going to follow The Luxury Spot's advice about how to make it last.

Review: CVS Nail Polish Corrector Pen

Confession: I don't usually paint inside the lines when painting my nails. To clean them I usually just wait till they dry to peel away the polish. So while shopping the beauty aisles at my local CVS store, I decided to try their Nail Polish Corrector Pen for just $4.50 (although I'm sure non-Manhattan people can find it for less).

You Know You're Getting Old When...

True story...

My birthday is just a few weeks away. While I'll only be turning the ripe age of 28, I feel like I'm already a middle-aged woman. I've talked about my nightly routine where I like to unwind (and unplug) with a book or music before I fall asleep, which means I'm in bed by 11. Apparently that's early for some people. So here are some signs that I've already begun that remind me that I'm getting (especially #1):

Quick Beauty Reviews: Organic Edition

Organic Beauty Reviews
Confession: I've fallen behind on my beauty reviews. I do try to keep up with them so please forgive me when I do tend to fall behind. I thought to rectify the situation that I'd do a few quick reviews of some brands that I've been introduced to recently. They all also happen to be wonderful organic companies.

Nanette Lepore Resort '14 Preview

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of previewing Nanette Lepore's Resort 2014 collection. The inspiration behind the collection was "the ethereal venice beach girl who exudes a breezy California nonchalance. She's all about self expression and passion and she shares her self on Instagram." I definitely would call it surfer girl chic. Seems like the girls of the movie Blue Crush would wear it. There was a mix of swimsuit material, cotton and leather detailing that allows this collection to transcend beyond resort season.

7 Things I Did This Weekend

Image via

1. Watched HBO's Gideon's Army (part of their summer documentary series). HIghly recommend it! Especially after hearing the devastating Trayvon Martin verdict, it's good to know that there are some good people in our justice system trying to defend those who cannot. I must confess I didn't understand how the subject matter was going to be interesting. It is based on 3 young public defenders in the South. I was so wrong. So amazing to see these people fighting for what's right. This is why I pay extra on my cable bill for HBO - so I can watch and learn about these amazing stories.

My Recent NCLA Polish Purchases

Malibu Beach Babe // As If! // Black Diamond

Totally unaware... I seem to have added several NCLA nail polishes to my collection recently and thought I'd share. You've already seen the lovely lavender As If! from this month's POPSUGAR Must Have Box. I also purchased Malibu Beach Babe and Black Diamond at the Shop Jeen sample sale a few weeks ago.

Here's Malibu Beach Babe alone:

Jade & Jasper Press Preview

On Tuesday I had the pleasure of visiting the Jade & Jasper offices to view their recent collections and play with some jewelry. Jade & Jasper is the vision of a jewelry designer who has been designing for other household names in the industry for 30 years but wanted to make her own pieces. She wanted to make jewelry fun and accessible for women everywhere. The most expensive item is around $150, which is a great deal for these quality pieces. Launching within the next month will be 7 new collections:

My July Birchbox

This month's Birchbox theme was Power Play. "This month's box is dedicated to helping you take control of any situation, and to make the most of every minute - on the clock or off duty." Not particularly sure how these products tied in to that idea but here's what I received:

Items I Will Not Be Buying (Or Need to Stop)

Items I Need to Stop Buying

As I've gotten older I've noticed my style preferences have changed (see this post). I do love shopping and updating my wardrobe during the Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. However, I've begun to keep a mental note of items I should stop myself from buying or remind myself that I never wear and I thought I'd share that list with you. Here we go...

My July POPSUGAR Must Have Box

Another month, another set of boxes. "The dog days of summer are upon us, and just because we may be searching for any way to beat the heat doesn't mean our fashion, beauty or entertaining routines have to suffer." This month's POPSUGAR Must Have Box was about staying cool and refreshed during these hot summer days. It was another great box that featured a piece of jewelry, a beauty product and some lifestyle items including delicious cookies. For just $35, I received approximately $100 worth of goodies. Here's what I received:

4th of July Weekend Recap

Some flooding in Jersey // Ready to eat

As I mentioned last week my sister finally was able to come into the city to see where I live. Unfortunately, it did not stop pouring all day. She did see mine and my brother's apartment as well as the High Line. We went to a ramen place Ippudo, which was quite to delicious. The weather was all over the place this past week - it went from torrential downpour to sweltering hot humidity where it was almost unbearable to be outside. We also experienced some "brown-outs" or temporary black outs which our efforts to save on electricity during hot summer days. Fun times!

Mani of the Week: Red, White & Blue

In honor of July 4th, I decided to bust out my red, white and blue nail polishes. I wanted to do something a little different... more subdued from previous manicures since I tend to go all out (see here and here). You don't know how excited I was to discover that if I painted my middle finger red then I could go "red, white, blue" no matter if I went left or right on my hand. I also decided to add a little glitter accent in Julep's "America the Beautiful" because it's the perfect July 4th polish.

Happy 4th of July!

Wishing you a happy 4th of July! I'm currently in Jersey celebrating with family. Hopefully you all are enjoying delicious food and catching some fireworks. Stay tuned tomorrow for some fabulous red, white and blue nails!

Stay Cool With Red Mango's Delicious Frozen Yogurt Smoothies

So cute!
What better way to stay cool in the sumer than with a delicious frozen yogurt smoothie?! Introducing Red Mango. It is one of the fastest-growing retailers of all-natural frozen yogurt and fresh fruit smoothies. I love the story behind the name "Mangoes only turn red when they reach the peak of ripeness. That's when they are the most delicious, and nutritious. Our name, Red Mango, is a symbol of our commitment to using only the best all-natural ingredients..." They thankfully opened up near me since they just launched 22 brand new super biotic summer smoothies. They are centered around 4 lifestyle categories including: Body Balance, which include flavorful and functional yogurt smoothies formulated with beneficial boosts. All Fruit Harmony, which contain refreshing dairy-free and soy-free smoothie options. Twisted Fruits, which are their signature yogurt smoothies offered in new and innovative fruit-forward flavors. And for the kiddos there's Just Kidd'n.

My July Julep Maven Box

This month's box was inspired by the California Coast and featured 2 new beauty products: Sea Salt Texture Spray and Dry Body Oil. I wasn't too impressed with the color selection as I found most repetitive to colors I already have so I went with the Modern Beauty box. Here's what was inside:

Sister in the City

I'm so clever... this weekend my sister and her family flew out from California for our family's big July 4th extravaganza. Today they are all coming into the city to see the sights. (Yes, I'm going to be a tour guide). My nephews have never been to New York City even though Auntie Kim and Uncle John live here. Excited to show them my love!
