Subscription Box Fail: RocksBox

I saw the interwebs all a buzz over this new subscription box service - RocksBox. What is it you ask? It's a jewelry subscription/rental service where you fill out a style profile (remember this for later in the post), they'll send you 3 designer pieces, you can then wear them for up to 60 days. If you want to keep the items, you can purchase them at members-only discounted prices. A month-to-month subscription is $19.99 but if you subscribe in a bundle then a month is $15.

My Sunkissed VoxBox

It's been a hot minute since I received an Influenster VoxBox. I was excited to received their Sunkissed VoxBox to remember what I have been missing. "Summer's filled with breaking rules, standing apart, ignoring your head and following your heart. The Sunkissed VoxBox is our gif to you for an endless sumer of love..." Here's what I received:

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Tomboy

Tomboy Chic
Striped Band Men's Fedora from David & Young $36 // Lightweight end-on-end shirt in bold lime stripe from J.Crew $64.50 // Raen Nevin in Tortoise sunglasses from Need Supply $80 // Stay Festooned Flat from ModCloth $32.99 // LOFT Boyfriend Jeans in Very Vintage Blue (on sale $39.88)

I'm officially old enough to be alive to see a childhood trend come full circle in my adult life. Tomboy! Young Kim was a full fledge tomboy. Overalls. Bandanas. Much rather be in the dirt than at the salon. Doesn't seem like the usual type to go to fashion school. However, as I mentioned in my "About the blog" section, having to wear uniforms half of my life I saw fashion as a form of rebellion. I did my experimenting but now in my late twenties I've settled back into what I call "tomboy chic." I am more comfortable in jeans than a dress or skirt. Now my jeans just fit my curves better.

My June Conscious Box

My 2nd Conscious Box arrived! As you may recall last month I introduced you to Conscious Box and mentioned how I purchased a 3-month subscription through Fab. Loving it thus far! This box featured less items than my first one. I'm sure it's hard to find completely vegan items but there were a lot of snacks. I think they heard my plea last month and included a card with all the items listed. Here's what was inside:

Weekend Recap: Birthday Blowout

Not my feet....

Last weekend I mentioned my brother's birthday was Monday. However, we didn't really have a family celebration so this weekend was a big birthday blowout at my parent's house in New Jersey. Friday night my brother, his girlfriend, a few friends and I drove down to the shore.

Mani of the Week: Rainbow Honey

On Tuesday I visited the HBO Global Expo, which is any beauty addicts dream. While touring some new, exciting emerging brands in the Splash Pavilion I met with the ladies of Rainbow Honey nail polish. Daniela, the founder, is from New Jersey (Jersey represent!) who has a background in science took her passion and created Rainbow Honey. Their products are designed and made in the US, are always free of Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Dibutyl Phthalate (the “big 3”), and with ingredients that have never been tested on animals.

Tips For Protecting Your Sensitive Skin This Summer

With the kick-off to summer officially tomorrow, it is important to prep and protect your skin. As someone who has sensitive skin, I can tell you that spending time in the sun and sand is not always fun. I'm Irish & Dutch so I don't ever get tan. I just burn (if I don't use the right sun protection) and get freckles. Simple® Advisory Board celebrity makeup artist Gita Bass who has worked with celebs like Ashley Greene, Selena Gomez, Katie Holmes, and Debra Messing shared her tips for protecting your sensitive skin:

How to: Beach Waves

Original image via WeHeartIt

I know there are plenty of tutorials on the web about how to get beach waves but for the ladies with pin straight hair like myself I thought I'd share my technique. I love beach waves because if you don't wash your hair every day (like me) this is a great way to keep your hair looking good and not greasy. It's a lot of work to create the waves but overall it's not difficult to maintain. Hint: it's all about not brushing your hair.

What to Pack In Your Beach Bag

What to Pack in Your Beach Bag

Everyone's favorite activity during the summer has to be hitting the beach. It's a great way to cool off especially during humid East Coast summer days. As far as bags, I have a navy & white striped nautical bag that I love. I think it's the perfect beach carry-all. Before you hit the beach, be sure to pack your bag full of these goodies:

Never A Dull Moment in New York City

Waffles @ The Smith // Adorable Father's Day card // Framed car pic // Our seats from Left Field // The least flattering pic of me, my Dad and bro at the game

This post was supposed to be the kick-off to Summer Fun Week here on the blog but this weekend was honestly a little rough for me. Saturday evening threw a whole wrench in what was supposed to be a lovely weekend. It was Father's Day and my brother's day (they always fall within a day of each other) so my parents were in town to celebrate. But it would be a memorable one for other reasons.

Summer Fun Week!

Although it already feels like summer here in NYC, summer doesn't officially begin until next Friday. So to get you ready I thought I'd dedicate an entire week filled with great tips and advice on how to have the best summer. Sound good? Here's what you can look forward to starting tomorrow:

My June Birchbox

This month’s Birchbox theme is “Wanderlust” and "we’re getting carried away with dreams of far-off voyages." They also debuted a new look. I like the inside of the box but not really loving the new B logo. But back to beauty... here's what I received in my box:

"The Moonlight Serenade" by Kate Hinderer

I have another book for you put to put on your reading list! Katy of Modly Chic just released her third Young Adult novel - "The Moonlight Serenade." It's now available on Kindle. Here's the synopsis from Amazon:

My Picks For Best and Worst BB Creams

In full disclosure I am by no means an expert on BB creams. These are simply my opinions about products I've tried. By now you've been bombarded with the new craze in beauty - BB creams. They originally began to help women with scars hide their "flaws" and then grew popular among in actresses who wanted a long lasting primer (at least from my understanding). BB stands for "Blemish Balm." Brands in America have tried to copy their success. Some successfully... others not so much. Most tend to be a glorified tinted moisturizer, which is alright with me most of the time since I don't wear heavy makeup every day. My biggest issue is finding a light enough shade for my porcelain skin. After trying several brands, I thought I'd share a round-up of what were some of my favorites and not so favorites.

My June POPSUGAR Must Have Box

This month's POPSUGAR Must Have box was centered around all your summer needs: a scarf to keep you warm on the cool nights (or if you're on a boat), a good beach read and a moisturizer to keep your skin feeling fresh. This box was the reason I love getting POPSUGAR's Must Have Box - it has a mix of fashion, beauty and lifestyle. Also, for just $35 I received approximately $165 worth of products. Here's what I received:

Q&A With Fitness Guru Kacy Duke

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing nationally-renowned fitness expert Kacy Duke who takes a holistic approach to fitness and health. She believes that a healthy lifestyle affects your body inside and out, which includes your skin. She's a member of The Simple Advisory Board. Exercising and eating right aren't punishment; instead, they are nourishment for your body and soul. She is the co-founder of Equinox and some of her celebrity clients are Julianne Moore, Denzel Washington, Mary J. Blige, and Lenny Kravitz.

You can listen to the interview above but here's a recap:

Movie Review: Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

HBO kicked off their summer series where they'll be premiering a new film every Monday night. Last night was the premiere of a movie I've been very interested in seeing, "Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer." If you don't know who/what Pussy Riot is, real quickly they are a feminist protest group in Russia who did performances in public landmarks wearing masks. After doing one of their performances in an Orthodox church they were arrested. But I highly recommend you do more research and learn about their message. Director Mike Lerner said, “The story of Pussy Riot is about a lot of things: politics, religion, national identity, gender equality, the nature of freedom and the enduring power of punk rock.” The film opens up with the following quote:

Popbasic: The Sherwood Collection

A couple of months ago I introduced you to Popbasic, which creates limited edition micro collections. They recently just launched their "Sherwood Collection," which includes a casual gray tee, an emerald maxi skirt and a statement collar necklace totaling $68. I had a few issues with fit in the first collection but this collection they clearly laid out different sizes and measurements. I like this collection because it's a complete outfit that I would wear together. Here's what was in the collection:

What to Get Your Dad This Father's Day

Father's Day Gift Guide
I don't know about you but in my family, men are the hardest ones to shop for! This year my Dad had a list but there were only 2 items. I said "but Dad you have 3 children..." so he told two of us to split one item (lol). I did manage to come up with a gift idea that I'm actually proud of myself for coming up with (pat on the back). These are some guidelines that I use for what to get your Dad this Father's Day:

I Ate Too Many Calories This Weekend...

Friday was a wet and dreary day here in New York. I was going to meet up with friends to see the new movie Dirty Wars but after being outside and getting drenched, I didn't feel like going back out so instead I ordered in some Italian food and treated myself to zeppoles. Chowed down while catching up on TV and tuned into my new favorite comedy show, Maron on IFC. Perfect night in.

Get Your Smile Glowing With GLO Science

Awhile back I had the pleasure of meeting the team and founders of GLO Science Dr. Jonathan B. Levine and his wife Stacey (who are the greatest couple ever!) at Single Edition's Blog Meets Brand event. Their enthusiasm for their brand was contagious. Laura, Wendy and I had a blast talking with them about their wonderful products. We also even got a chance to take one of their GLO Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Device home with us.

Mini Nail Polish Haul

Pastels: Sally Hansen I Pink I Can // L'Oreal Penthouse Pink // Sally Hansen Lively Lilac // Sally Hansen Lightening // Revlon's Minted

I may have gone overboard with my nail polishes purchases recently. I blame the the Facebook swap group I'm in. I purchased these 5 polishes for just $9 from a fellow member. How could I pass them up?

Brand Review: Nuance by Salma Hayek

At the Getting Gorgeous event I won a bag full of hair products which included some of Salma Hayek's line Nuance, which is sold exclusively through CVS. Salma says the line was "inspired by my grandmother, my products are designed to help every woman enhance the nuances that define her individual beauty." The line includes makeup, skincare, body washes and hair care products. I was really surprised to find out that all the products were not tested on animals and were paraben free.

My First Detox Experience

Cleanses and detoxes are a big trend. I'm constantly reading in my social networks feeds about people participating in one for a few days or for longer periods of times. I've been intrigued but never wanted to pay the heavy price tag. I received blisslabs™ nutricosmetics fatgirlcleanse™ two-day detox in my Fitness Magazine goodie bag. 2 days? I could handle that! It seemed like a do-able option since it says don't drink on an empty stomach and drink the supplements along with a healthy diet. It retails for $48 and has plenty of packets for 2 days.

My June Julep Maven Box

Bravo to Julep for every month creating a lustworthy collection of nail polishes and beauty products. Boo from my wallet which takes a hit every month (lol)! This month's collection was called "Nantucket Nostalgia" and had some beautiful summer shades. This month's box was also the launch of the long-awaited first ever DD DD Crème. The June Julep Maven box I selected Boho Glam. Here's what came inside my box:

Weekend Recap: Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

Plane coming in over Newark airport

After returning for an extended weekend in Jersey for Memorial Day, I was quickly thrusted back into grad school. Tuesday night marked the beginning of my summer semester and my first class really hit the ground running. While I'm glad I kept the work load to 2 courses, I still underestimated the intensity and fast-pace of summer classes. Wish me luck!

New Month, New Look!

Notice anything different? Got a new blog design! I've been wanting to give my blog a little face lift (it is nearly 4 years old lol!) and thankfully it's finally come to light. I had an idea in my head of what I wanted and worked tirelessly with Faye Kent to have her make it come true. Hope you like it!

P.S. Big thanks to Faye for putting up with my back and forth!

OCC Lip Tar Stained Gloss & Nail Lacquer Swatches

A few weeks I attended an Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics event at Sephora where they were announcing the new faces of their brand - drag queens! I received quite a few lip tars in my goodie bag but decided to swatch some of my favorites. They just released their Stained Glass lip tar collection which are a gloss that combines the pigment potency of Lip Tar with a casual glossy finish. The first 3 are probably the colors I'll be wearing the most this summer:
