Movie Review: "Behind the Candelabra"

Can we talk about the fabulousness that is Liberace? His personal life was just as dramatic as his presence on stage. HBO's original movie "Behind the Candelabra" showcases the love affair of a younger man, Scott Thornson (played by Matt Damon) and Liberace (played by Michael Douglas). The movie is said to be based on a book written by the real Scott Thornson, but I'm not sure how much is accurate. If it's all true then WOW what a messed up relationship they had.

"I want to be everything to you Scott. Father, brother, lover, best friend" - Liberace

The movie has a lot stars, some are more easily recognizable than others (i.e. Rob Lowe as the plastic surgeon). Some of the star studded cast includes Dan Akroyd, Rob Lowe, and Paul Reiser. It takes place over about a decade from 1977 to 1987 when Liberace dies of the AIDS complications. It was interesting how many of Liberace's fans had no idea he was gay yet he was the most flamboyant man you'd ever come across.

Liberace had a thing for young men. They were sort of toys for him to play with him and toss away once he was done with them. His relationship with Scott Thornson was nothing like you'd ever heard of. Liberace wanted to adopt Scott (who had no family) while also being his lover. Scott is an impressionable kid from Wisconsin when he meets Liberace. He is quickly wrapped up in Liberace's world, even going under the knife in an extreme makeover at Liberace's request. At the end of 3 years, he's tossed out like the rest and left on the streets, an addict and nothing of his former self. Yet when Liberace calls on his death bed Scott goes to see him.

It's an amazing story and Michael Douglas and Matt Damon were both terrific. Great to see heterosexual actors doing such graphic homosexual scenes. It's no longer a stigma. I definitely think Michael Douglas deserves an award for his performance! Warning: there are some graphic plastic surgery scenes.

What movies have you watched recently?

  1. I've heard nothing but rave reviews for this movie! I need to see it!! It sounds like something different than the other current popular movies. :)

  2. Yes, definitely different than movies in the theaters right now. Glad there are rave reviews!

  3. I can't wait to see this movie; I'm hoping to watch it sometime this week.

  4. Let me know what you think once you do :)

  5. President Obama is firmly committed to the homosexual agenda and recent promises made to the LBGT and others have caused some in the conservative movement and the evangelical and Pentecostal churches to shudder. It is also clear that the church's concerns have little bearing on the President's position to throw the doors open for the "gay agenda by closing the steel doors around those who make so much as a whimper against the gays. Signing the untested and highly suspect Matthew Shepard act is the latest evidence of that.
