Beauty Brand to Know: HEVIA MD SKIN SCIENCE

"Inspired by Nature. Perfected by Science" is the tag line of HEVIA MD SKIN SCIENCE. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Oscar Hevia tried to find a suitable skincare line for his clients but was unsuccessful. He decided he would create that line and after years of extensive research and testing, HEVIA MD SKIN SCIENCE™ was born. While searching for the perfect ingredients, he found it in his backyard in Florida, the Red Mangrove plant. The plant contains anti-flammatory and antiseptic properties which aid in soothing and healing the skin. With that plant and 10 other ingredients, Dr. Hevia created the patent-pending OH-XI Complex which increases cellular anti-aging protein. His line is all about non-surgical treatments we can use to help slow down the signs of aging.

There are 8 products in the line currently. Over 80% of the ingredients used in the line are organic and harvested from sustainable resources. I had a chance to try out the Renewing Hand & Body Cream ($79) and the Potent Repair Serum ($275).

The serum is called "potent" because it is packed with the highest levels of HEVIA's active ingredients including Red Mangrove extract and brown algae. It helps in evening your skin tone, making your skin not only brighter but soft and smoother as well. I was in desperate need of a serum this winter as the samples I had before ran out. It's very light and doesn't have a greasy/oily feel. A little goes a long way!
The Renewing Hand & Body Cream promotes and retains intense hydration to the skin and aids in the process of repairing dry, damaged skin. It contains Red Mangrove Extract to help repair skin damage as well as shea butter to heal and nourish your skin. Dr. Hevia believes that the creams we use on our hands should be just as elegant as the ones we use on the face. The back of the hands are a major indicator of aging so you need to moisturizer them consistently. The lotion was a bit thin so I wasn't sure how moisturizing it would be, but I enjoyed it. One thing I wasn't fond of was a shimmery reminescence that it left behind.

Dr. Oscar Hevia invited some bloggers to a Q&A where we were able to ask questions about the products we tried as well as get his insights about skincare. Here's a recap:

Should I change my products periodically or is sticking to one routine better?
Your skin may have different requirements depending on the environment or changes in seasons. Everyone's skin is different but you should be able to maintain a regular regimen. You may need to change a product (such as a cleanser) or 2 with certain environmental changes.

When should you begin the anti-aging routine?
You want to start before the aging process begins. The best age is the late '20s especially lighter skin types that age quicker (you may recall this in my Pros of Cons of Fair Skin post). You should start with the serum because the younger skin types are not as dry and you can begin to lock in that moisture early on.

How much sun is too much sun?
No more than 10 minutes unprotected for anybody. Otherwise darker skin types can get away with more sun exposure but everyone should wear SPF every day. Fair skin people see earlier signs of sun damage but usually the moisture levels in your skin are a good indicator of too much sun exposure. Followed by dark spots and broken capillaries.

What is the future of skincare? Where do you see the industry going?
Hopefully we can get better at making products to more successfully treat the collagen layer or the elasticity of the skin. Trying to get the skin to tighten on it's own rather than with procedures. We're close.

His products are available online at www.heviamdskinscience.com and prices range from $39 to $275. Not only are these products good for your skin but for the environment. A portion of all proceeds are donated to the South Florida National Parks Trust to restore and replant mangrove trees.

What new brands have you tried?

  2. I love organic and natural skincare, but I don't think I'll be able to afford this line. :( I'm always intrigued by science-based skincare!
