Movie Review: Beasts of the Southern Wild

I was going to wait to post my review on Beasts of the Southern Wild but after the Oscar nominations came out, I couldn't wait to share my thoughts on this film. If you don't already know, it received 4 nominations including Best Picture and the little girl in the movie who plays Hushpuppy, Quvenzhane Wallis, is the youngest actress to be nominated! It first received buzz after taking home the Grand Jury Prize and Best Cinematography award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Now it's headed to the Academy Awards! I have four words for you - See This Movie Now.  It is such a breath of fresh air and very rarely does a movie change the way you look at not only cinema and films but captures a story.

It takes place in the southern Mississippi Delta but it feels like a far way world with no structured society in place that they call 'the bathtub.' It is a vibrant place full off interesting folks that although they may not look each other get along because they're all of the same socio-economic status: poor. It's very reminiscent of Katrina with the river flooding and the locals are left to save each other. Even the actor playing Hushpuppy's father was a Hurricane Katrina survivor who never acted before. There is a mystical element that shows ice caps melting around "beasts" and makes the water rise (it will make sense when you watch it lol).

The story is narrated by the 6-year old girl so it's not a blockbuster movie with a beginning, middle and end all happily tied up in a bow. You learn about her whole world through her eyes. The beginning of the movie is really powerful because it is completely silent and you just watch Hushpuppy play around in what most of us would consider filth but in her eyes it is a playhouse full of wonder then this sweet little voice comes on. I will warn you now that you will cry but you should still see it. It is a powerful movie with beautiful imagery and an unique story that I've never seen told in movies before.

What other Oscar nominated movies do you recommend seeing?
