Pros and Cons of Having Fair Skin

Growing up women are always instilled with hating some part of their body. Their hips are too big, their hair is too frizzy, their nose is crooked. Being a little person, I disliked a lot about my body but it quickly shapes who you are as a person. So by a younger age than most girls, I was sure of who I was. However, one flaw that plagued me was my pale skin. My background is Irish and Dutch so there was no hope for me but I always found darker skin more beautiful than mine. Yet all of my friends of non-Caucasian decent told me how beautiful my skin was. Why was hating something about myself that so many other cultures found beautiful? Women spend billions of dollars a year to change a part of themselves: hair, skin tone, length of nails/eyelashes, and the list goes on. While I was visiting China, I couldn't help but notice all the women covering up their bodies or carrying umbrellas during the suffocatingly hot summer. Why? Because fair skin is considered more beautiful in their society and they didn't want to risk their skin tanning so they covered it up. Since then I've grown to appreciate my pale skin as it has it's upsides.

7 Samples I Loved So Much I Purchased More

If you read my blog often enough, you know I have a beauty box subscription addiction. I love trying new products and discovering new brands. Rather than round up my favorite beauty products this month, I thought I'd share the products I purchased full-sizes of (meaning, I loved them so much I wanted more!). In no particular order:

Weekend Recap: Nothing Too Exciting

Friday: I finally got my butt over to ClosetDash's Shop to swap some items. If you live in New York, I definitely recommend stopping by as you get more bang for a buck than at Buffalo Exchange. I got this oversized sheer button-up blouse that I can't wait to wear during Fashion Week. There was also finally some snowfall in the city and I was elated! The only time 3 degree temperatures are bearable are when snow is falling. It's so beautiful. Unfortunately in the city, they shovel and plow it almost immediately so there's barely any left by the morning.

Mani of the Week: Ginger + Liz's Grounded

I was in the market for a new gray polish when I stopped in Ricky's to check out their Ginger + Liz selection. For those who don't know about the brand, Ginger + Liz was founded in 2009 by two friends and was the first vegan-friendly nail polish. I recently had the pleasure of hearing them speak at the Beauties & Brains Behind the Brand panel. "Grounded" immediately caught my attention as a gotham city gray. It's lasted all week with no chipping. Next I'll have to come up with some fun nail art perhaps some skyscrapers?

My January Beauty Army Kit

January marked the one year anniversary of Beauty Army so they offered us an extra sample. If you don't know, Beauty Army is a monthly subscription like many of the others except that you complete a beauty profile to reveal 9 personalized products then you can select up to 6. You can skip each month (like I did last month) if you don't want the samples. And they also have discounted pricing for members. Here's what I selected:

Q&A With NYC-Made Designer Ramiro Encizo

I love supporting NYC-made designers because there are so few left sadly. Ramiro Encizo is a luxury handbag designer who interned with the legendary Judith Lieber and works with local NYC leathersmiths to create exquisite leather bags with his signature heart nameplate. I recently had the chance to visit his showroom and ask him a few questions.

My January POPSUGAR Must Have Box

Yes after all the drama with the POSUGAR Must Have boxes, I'm back! Finally was able to get a hold of a sweet person who was very gracious. They also changed their policies so it's a lot easier to opt so they won me back over. December's box wasn't that impressive so I didn't blog about it. The January Must Have box was about "getting a fresh start on that fitness resolution while still finding time to indulge in some warm treats." I like the sound of that! Here's what I received:

Weekend Recap: Not Like The Movies...

Image via

Friday: I saw Silver Linings Playbook while it was freezing cold in NYC. I want to see all the Oscar nominated movies (well most of them...) before the Oscars. SLP had a lot of good reviews much to my surprise so thought I'd check it out for myself. I wouldn't say it's Oscar-worthy. It was nice to see Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence not in their typical roles. Didn't really think they had such acting chops. But how hard is it for two crazy people to fall in love when they look like Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence?! It was a refreshing romcom that deals with real life issues when most romcoms don't but I wouldn't nominate them or the movie for an Academy Award.

Review: Essie's Sleek Sticks Nail Appliques

Essie recently joined the nail sticker craze and came out with their own collection called "Sleek Sticks" which feature 12 high fashion designs. I loved all the designs and knew I had to give them a try as a nail art freak. I decided on "Stickers and Stones" which is described as "a bubbly cabochon angora pewter." They cost $10.25 and you receive 16 appliques.

DIY: Studded Barrettes

As I predicted for 2013, hair accessories are already a big trend. Barrettes used to be viewed as an accessory for little girls but now top fashionistas are wearing them. Even my girl Cate Blanchett was spotted recently wearing one during The Hobbit premiere. I had some lying around and thought I needed to jazz them up to my liking - studs!

Trend I Will Not Be Wearing: Camo

When I think of camo - I think of this:

Image via

As much as designers want to send models down the runway or chic New Yorkers want to pound the pavement in this trend, I just can't bring myself to wear it. However, I would wear camo green. I purchased an anorak from Old Navy in Pine (color no longer available but I've posted pics of me wearing it on Instagram) that I love. Here are some other options I'd wear:

How to Get Nicole Richie's Retro Waves at the Golden Globes With @SuaveBeauty

Retro waves were a big trend at the Golden Globes this year. My favorite waves of the night came from Nicole Richie who actually used Suave Professionals! They recently launched a Moroccan Infusion line that is infused with authentic Moroccan argan oil and gives brilliant shine. I definitely think her looked healthy and shiny.

Here’s how Suave Professionals® Stylist, Jenny Cho, created Nicole’s red carpet look:

4 Things I Did This Weekend

One is lopsided but was too lazy to fix it for the picture

1. Organized my bathroom. In Manhattan there's not much space anywhere in your apartment especially counter space in your bathroom. My sink was getting cluttered with products and I wanted to find away to organize them but still have them in sight. I picked up these bins that stick to the wall (typically used in showers) and it holds everything. Now I have a clean countertop but can still reach for the items I need. Life is better with less clutter.

Best and Worst Dressed at the 70th Annual Golden Globes

Image via

Award season has arrived! The Golden Globes kicked off award season officially with it's first female hosts: Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. I like the Golden Globes the best because it's a more relaxed, fun award show so stars tend to have more fun with their style. Retro hair and red were popular trends on the red carpet. So much so I was getting a little sick of it but let's break it down... shall we?

Movie Review: Beasts of the Southern Wild

Image via

I was going to wait to post my review on Beasts of the Southern Wild but after the Oscar nominations came out, I couldn't wait to share my thoughts on this film. If you don't already know, it received 4 nominations including Best Picture and the little girl in the movie who plays Hushpuppy, Quvenzhane Wallis, is the youngest actress to be nominated! It first received buzz after taking home the Grand Jury Prize and Best Cinematography award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Now it's headed to the Academy Awards! I have four words for you - See This Movie Now.  It is such a breath of fresh air and very rarely does a movie change the way you look at not only cinema and films but captures a story.

Mani of the Week: Snakeskin Nails

What better way to show off snakeskin nails then with brass knuckles?!

I've been seeing snakeskin nails all over Pinterest and Essie just released nail stickers in a snakeskin pattern. I knew there had to be an easy DIY to this! I did some research and came up with my own strategy that combined several of the posts. Even my girl at Elle Sees even did one! It seems like a lot of steps but it's actually fairly easy for a really cool looking effect. Let's get started!

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Paint Splatter

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Paint Splatter

Recently there's been a trend of what I call paint splatter or some even look like water color prints. The Prabal Gurung collection for Target is full of these looks and I'm in love! I definitely want to incorporate a piece for spring and will be keeping my eye out for more affordable options. Have you seen any others?

Review: Julep Polish Remover Pads

For my January Julep Maven box I added on their one-step polish remover pads since I was interested in giving them a try. Each packet contains 10 pads. A set of 10 is $9.99 or if you're a Julep Maven they're just $7.99. Each pad is infused with aloe vera to condition your nails while removing polish.

What You'll Need to Fight A Cold

1. Tea with Honey // 2. Cough Drops // 3. Gatorade // 4. Emergen-C // 5. Salt Water // 6. Tissues

Winter is in full effect here on the East Coast and that means it's cold and flu season. I've already welcomed the New Year with one and apparently so have a lot of other people. These are some items I recommend stocking up this cold and flu season. I am not claiming to be a doctor but just wanted to share what helped me get through my cold. Honey is my favorite item to use because it coats your throat and tastes good. Skip the milk and sugar and just put it directly into your tea. I also prefer honey lemon drops over other flavors and sometimes put them directly into my tea. Take medicine. Don't try to fight it solely on your own. There are tons of products out there so find one that addresses all your problems: cough, cold, fever, congestion, etc. Drink lots of fluids. I like to go back and forth between hot and cold. Hot with the and for cold I either drink Gatorade or Emergen-C. I also like to gargle salt water which helps a sore throat. Also, invest in soft tissues that have some lotion in them. You don't want anything rough!

Weekend Recap: Staying in Sick

Once I landed in New York again where the weather is a drastic change from southern California (where I was for the holiday), I had the sniffles and a dry throat. But by Thursday I had a full blown cold with a congested head and hoarse voice. I did everything I knew how to make it go away but still barely anything felt good on my throat. Thankfully now writing this my throat is better and my head is less congested. But most of my weekend was staying in drinking tea and honey.

OPI's Skyfall Collection Nail Polish Swatches

For Christmas I received OPI's Skyfall Mini Collection which is a set of 4 miniature sized nail polishes. The Skyfall collection features 12 shades inspired by the latest James Bond film, which also happens to be the 50th Anniversary of the franchise. I have no interest in the movie but love this whole collection (lol!). This mini set came with: Golden Eye, The Spy Who Loved Me, The World is Not Enough and Live and Let Die. Here are the swatches:

Movie Review: "Save the Date"

Save the Date is an indie romantic comedy starring Alison Brie (of NBC's Community) and Lizzy Caplan. You already know my love of Lizzy. Alison is also a funny lady. However, this movie was more on the heartfelt side. Alison and Lizzy play two sisters with different views on love... especially weddings. Alison is in the process of planning her wedding while Lizzy rejects her boyfriend's proposal and rebounds with a new guy.

My January Julep Maven Box

So excited when I got back to have my Julep Maven box waiting for me. This month's theme was vacation because they were releasing a new neon collection. As always they did a great job with the packaging: bright colors and I liked the touch of dried grass that looked like a Hawaiian hula skirt. But as much as I love neons, I'm not sure I want to wear them in frigid temperatures. It seemed a bit ill-timed for us East Coasters who don't have the luxury to travel to a tropical paradise but the colors are still pretty. I choose "Classic With a Twist" which included:

My Near Year's Resolutions for 2013

It's that time of year again! When it comes to New Year's resolutions, I don't like to do anything cliche or anything that seems out of reach. I was able to keep most of my resolutions last year because I kept them small. This year I'm focusing on enriching my life. I'm nearing 30 and I think it's time to move away from the broke college kid days and move towards a more mature, enriched life. Here are my resolutions for 2013:
