Mani of the Week: Winter Wonderland

Original Image Source: vintagerosewinterwonderland.tumblr.com via FACTORY PR on Pinterest

I was inspired by the recent snowfall we had here in New York (although it wasn't as pretty as the picture above). I wanted to create snowfall looking nail design. While looking for another pale blue color, I discovered this Julep color in my collection. You know you have too many nail polishes when you find colors you didn't even realize you had and go "when did I get this?" I'm glad I did because it's gorgeous and exactly the color I was looking for. I simply layered two glitter top coats from Essie and OPI.

What's New In My Closet

What's New In My Closet

While I didn't get to do much shopping while visiting my folks in California over the holiday since we all came down with the flu. My mom did pick me up some great new items. Can you say peplum?! She used to wait to have me shop to pick out what I wanted for Christmas since I have "discerning" taste but I think she has a firm handle on what I like now as evidence by this mini haul. Let's break it down...

How to Wear Tights in the Winter

I received two pairs of No nonsense tights and leggings and I thought they best way to show off these affordable options were to wear them from day to night. Since so many gals are still committing the "pants aren't leggings" faux pas, I wanted to show the "proper" way to wear them.

My First Beauty Army Kit

One good thing that came out of flying a red eye with the stomach flu was coming home to my beauty boxes! I was especially excited about my first Beauty Army kit as I've heard good things. They also exclusively carry one of my favorites - Grand Central Beauty. It works a little differently than the other beauty boxes because you get to pick your samples based on the beauty profile you fill out. You get to select 6 out of the 9 they give to you for $12. I think it's a great option for those who want a more personalized beauty subscription box each month with some flexibility. But I most point out their fantastic customer service!

The Faux Thanksgiving That Almost Didn't Happen

There once was a family
Who lived in a big ol' house.
They liked to get together for Thanksgiving
Because isn't that what it's all about?
They came from far and near,
To celebrate what they coined Faux Thanksgiving.
Its the same as any turkey day
With good food, laughter and cheer.
Well I'm sad to say
It almost didn't happen this year.

Mani of the Week: Border Nails

A big trend in nail art is border nails right now. I've been wanting to try it but knew it would require a lot of patience. I did a search on YouTube and there were lots of different methods. I made my own version using Aquaphor around my nails and drawing the border by hand. I used the 2 Essie colors that I thought would go together for Thanksgiving: hunter green and gold - both Klout perks!

Guest Post: How to Deal With Thanksgiving When Dating by Eleanore Wells

Original image via
Today's guest post comes from Eleanore Wells of 'The Spinsterlicious Life.'

I love Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday. It’s a kick-off to the holiday season (Halloween doesn’t count), and the best holiday, as far as I’m concerned. Everyone celebrates it and there aren’t a lot of rules: eat well, enjoy each other’s company, pack up some leftovers. But if you’re single-and-dating, Thanksgiving may also be the kick-off to a “what are we doing” conversation.

It's That Time of Year Again...

Holiday travel! Oh the joys. Tonight I'm hopping on a plane with my brother to spend Thanksgiving in California with my family and to see these cuties:

Weekend Recap: Projects & A Sigh of Relief

Saturday: I met up with blogging buddy Laura of Blush & Beakers at the Ace Hotel to work on a project (details later this week!) which pretty much took up our entire day. We grabbed some dinner at California Pizza Kitchen (they took off my BLT pizza!) and called it a night.

bom bom jewelry Private Holiday Shopping Event With Fashionista NY Girl

Last night I went out to support my fellow blogger buddy Heather of Fashionista NY Girl while she hosted a private shopping event with bom bom jewelry. It was held at an intimate pop-up shop next to the Roger Smith Hotel. The champagne was flowing and yummy chocolates were in abundance. And there was plenty of gorgeous jewelry to try on!

Mani of the Week: Cat Eyes

This is a throwback mani. In the beginning stages of my nail art addiction, I used to do this manicure with a line down the middle. I thought it looked a lot like cat eyes. Not sure if there's a real name for this look. Decided to use my go to black from Wet 'n Wild and the Essie gold nail polish I got from Klout. Love the color combo of black and gold - very gilded!

My November Birchbox

This month's Birchbox was in celebration of Thanksgiving: giving thanks, giving back, and giving treats. They partnered this month with The Art of Elysium, a non-profit that encourages actors, artists, and musicians to dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. What an awesome cause and they have curated celebrity picks for you to shop. But back to the box...

Review: Aussie Miraculously Smooth Shampoo & Conditioner

I received Aussie's Miraculously Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner in my PG Beauty Klout perk. "Seriously silky smooth for wildly frizzy manes" says their website. The collection is infused with Australian botanicals, adds moisture to rough manes-without weighing them down-for sleek, silky, well-styled locks. During the winter, my hair dries out and tends to be more frizzy than usual. I like to use Aussie's 3-Minute Miracle to give it a quick moisture boost. I was excited to try these products since I am an Aussie fan already. Both cost around $4 for a 13.5 fl oz bottle.

What I'm Selling on @Threadflip

There are tons of options for selling your clothes online but the place I've had the best success is Threadflip. Threadflip is a newly launched startup based in California. My general rule is if I haven't worn it in a year, then get rid of it. However, some of these items were barely used and deserved loving homes. Some items I grew out of (damn hips!) so it's not because I don't like them. Here are some of my favorites:

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Leather Details

Leather Details

Well I've been craving this trend for quite some time actually. However, I've finally incorporated some pieces into my wardrobe! I think if you're not ready to fully commit to a leather piece then finding a piece with leather details is the way to go. You can go with something subtle like these Ecru pants or get full on sleeves like this jacket from PacSun. I would go with any kind of leather detail quite frankly.

Weekend Recap: Birthdays and Awards

The menu // The feast // Nnenna and I (with flash, so not the best pic)
Friday: I met up with Alex of Delayed Missives and Nnenna of Star Crossed Smile to celebrate Nnenna's birthday at Bread & Tulips. She didn't get to have a proper because of Hurricane Sandy. I enjoyed some tortellini while they feasted on a meat plate which took up the entire table.

My November Sample Society Box

Hooray! My beauty boxes are beginning to arrive after Hurricane Sandy derailed most shipping and affected many of their fulfillment centers. They all graciously sent emails out apologizing for delays but I definitely understand that it was unusual circumstances so I patiently waited. BeautyBar.com's Sample Society was the first to arrive. And there were some new updates.

eBook Review: "Love at First Click: The Ultimate Guide to Online Dating" by Laurie Davis

1 in 5 relationships start online. There are over 1,000 dating sites. It can be overwhelming to decide which sites to use or how to present yourself in your online profile. That's where online dating experts come in like Laurie Davis. (Fun fact: She met her fiancee via Twitter). Laurie is an online dating coach and founder of eFlirtExpert.com, which provides the ultimate guide to finding love online. I had the pleasure of reading her book "Love at First Click: The Ultimate Guide to Online Dating." It really clicked (get it?) with me because I've had quite the interesting experience with online dating myself.

Mani of the Week: Color Blocking Nails

Very rarely do I ever just stick to one nail color on my nails. However, I was getting a little bored with the accent nail trend so wanted a new way to show off more than one color on my nails. Enter color blocking. This manicure is so easy to do and I love the results!

Movie Review: Safety Not Guaranteed

Image via

While trying to avoid all the election coverage for a few hours on Tuesday, I finally watched one of my Netflix movies, Safety Not Guaranteed. It had a cast of many comedic actors I enjoy: Jake Johnson (Nick from New Girl), Aubrey Plaza (from Parks and Recreation), Mark Duplass (from The League) and Kristen Bell. The premise is that an egotistical magazine writer wants to write a story about a classified ad in the paper he saw. He drags along two interns to help him write the story, one of them is Aubrey.

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Print Dresses

After working on the Winter Date Night Looks post featuring Ted Baker pieces and McQueen's bee-inspired designs, I started falling in love with unique prints. Prints one wouldn't think would be pretty or to put on a dress. It's a great way to spice up a dreary winter wardrobe. Jude Connally is known for her retro inspired prints. I'm obsessed with that ASOS galaxy print dress (not ure why it's a "prom dress" though). I think it's a trend that transcends seasons.

An Important Victory This Election Year

Image via

Taking a break from fashion for a second to discuss the election. I think it's important to have a firm grasp on your country's political systems (especially if you vote). I pride myself on being an educated voter so I can make an informed decision come election day. Although I will admit, trying to keep up with politics will drive you insane especially these past 4 years. That's why I like to watch humorous political shows like The Daily Show, Colbert Report and listen to Citizen Radio. Why was this important this year? Never in my lifetime (and my parent's lifetime as they tell me...) has a president been so disrespected. On the day Obama was elected, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell said that his sole purpose was to make Obama a one-term President. That is the antithesis of democracy. Officials are elected to help pass laws and legislation for the benefit of the people, not for their own political gain or agenda. Then there was the shouting of "you lie" during one of Obama's speeches. Never happened to a President (nor should it ever). And the constant questioning of whether he was an actual citizen of this country and making this freely elected President show his birth certificate was ludicrous. There are so many other examples but those are the biggest in my mind. This election was important for Americans to look beyond all that and decide if they wanted to elect President Barack Obama for a second term... and they do.

Happy Election Day!

Image via

I hope you're all going out and voting today! No matter what your political affiliation is, we should all exercise our right to vote. *Gets up on soap box* Voting is a freedom that many of us take for granted. A true democracy can only function if the people voice their opinions and one way to have our voice heard is through elections. If you're not fond of either candidate, vote 3rd party! Even though it's easy to be disillusioned, I still get a great feeling when I submit my ballot. When you give up your vote, the SuperPacs win. *Gets off soap box*

Weekend Recap: Can't Keep New York Down

Friday: Friday night was a good night. Power was restored to many downtown neighborhoods in Manhattan. My brother and his girlfriend were able to return to their apartments in the Village. Also, after much backlash Mayor Bloomberg postponed the marathon that was supposed to happen this weekend. I think he made the right decision because the runners would be passing through neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Staten Island that are still recovering after Hurricane Sandy. It would have been ostentatious, which is not a good representation of our city. But something that did continue as scheduled, was the New York Knicks playing at home at Madison Square Garden against the Miami Heat. Their season opener was supposed to be at the new Barclay's Center in Brooklyn but transportation was still down so instead it happened at home (like I think it should have been). Carmelo Anthony opened up with a few words about the Sandy recovery. The stadium gave them an electrifying energy and the Knicks returned the favor by putting on a great show.

Mani of the Week: Go Knicks!

Halloween has come and gone. There's a new reason to celebrate on my nails - basketball is back! Last night was supposed to be the big opener between NYC rivals New York Knicks and newly appointed Brooklyn Nets. However, thanks to Hurricane Sandy it was postponed. I still decided to show my team spirit on my nails since they're playing Miami tonight.

Ted Baker x House of Fraser Will Keep You Chic This Winter

The temperatures are dropping here on the East Coast. Winter is a great time to date because you can find someone to cuddle by the fire and go ice skating at Rockefeller Center. But the challenge is how to stay chic while having to bundle up. House of Fraser proudly hosts the latest collection by Ted Baker, which has clear, unswerving focus on quality, attention-to-detail and a quirky sense of humour. Ted Baker is one of the fastest growing lifestyle brands in the UK and have some great pieces for a chic winter date night look.
