My Haircut Experience at The Drawing Room NYC Thanks to Gilt City

Located on the 2nd floor in the fashionable SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, The Drawing Room New York is a minimalistic, swanky salon. Why was Kim there? Because I had purchased a deal from Gilt City for 45% off a Haircut + Blowout. I was in desperate need of a trim. I purchased the deal back in September; however, when I called to book my appointment the next available one wasn't until October (at least two weeks out). That doesn't typically happen when I purchase these deals with Lifebooker or the other sites. This peaked my curiosity about the salon.

The salon staff were what you'd typically expect from a salon in SoHo. Pretentious. No one was particularly rude, but no one was particularly nice except for my hairstylist Le. A petite, fashionable Asian girl who's bangs I envied. We talked through what I wanted which was the usual trim and bangs. She made her recommendations and then it was off to the shampooing station. She did an awesome job massaging my scalp that I slightly dozed off in the chair. They had Tigi and Bed Head products on display but she didn't tell me what she was using on my hair.

Snapped a photo while waiting

The salon was basically all white except for a few pops of red in the furniture. The salon chairs looked straight of the Jetsons. While they may have been stylish, I didn't find them particularly comfortable to sit in. Le did a great job cutting my hair and checked in that I was happy with the length. Although I never do anything drastic to my hair, I am particular about what I like so I was happy that she asked before just chopping away.

For the blowout she asked how I wanted my hair and I requested volume with movement (a.k.a. what I can never accomplish myself). She didn't apply any products to my hair which I found odd. Then proceeded to use a roll brush throughout. I wasn't very impressed with the volume part. However, the stylist did everything so I know they all have their specialty so perhaps big sexy hair wasn't hers.

The salon offers up to 3 free bang trims before being charged which I thought was a nice bonus. I gave a 30% tip of what it would have cost me plus the $49 I spent on the Gilt voucher, all in all I saved about $70. Would I spend the regular $100+ on haircut there? No because honestly I'd never pay that price, which is why I do these deals. I will say this experience was better than some of the ones from Lifebooker. I would buy another deal from them and just not go on a rainy day (disaster!).

Have you purchased a deal for a haircut before? What was your experience?

  2. Three bang trims is really good! I've never gotten a deal for anything hair related before... I'm always a little worried that the salon won't be too invested in me and will totally mess with my hair.

I'm having my hair cut tomorrow and have no idea what to do with it. Eek!

    1. I try to read the Yelp reviews before purchasing. Thankfully no nightmares yet but I basically get a trim so they can't really screw that up.

Good luck with your haircut tomorrow!

  3. The salon looks nice, but at prices like that for the full priced version I'd expect a lot better treatment from staff!

I've had a haircut in a thunderstorm before though and it was such a waste - I hate it when the weather ruins it for you!

    1. haha you clearly don't understand Manhattan attitudes :p The higher the prices the ruder the staff.

Oh damn :( Now I understand why old ladies wear plastic wraps on their heads hehe

  6. No I haven't because my hair is not too mess up with. As a woman of colorm not just anyone get to put their hands in mine. Only someone that knows how to work with my texture can. As always,I enjoyed reading another post of yours. I have to add that just because a salon is top notch, it does not guarantee that you will come out with something you like.

  7. I have just bought a deal for color and treatment, but the salon was booked and I have my appointment on Nov 10th... I am not sure I'd buy a cut too, I am particular about it and I prefer to go to my favourite stylist for it
