FBFF: What Happened to the Blogging Community?

Source: marcusdesigninc.blogspot.com via Kecia on Pinterest

This week's FBFF topic is blogging community. IFB had a recent post that discussed the lack of community and I couldn't agree more!

1. What blogging communities do you belong to?
FBFF, SingleEdition, IFB, etc. Most of the ones featured on the right sidebar!

2. What do you think the roll of community is in blogging?
To provide a resourceful and nurturing environment.

3. Blog comments, Twitter interactions and meaningful Facebook threads have decreased in the last several months. What are your thoughts on why that is?
I had this discussion with some friends a couple of months ago. I was growing frustrated that I make a point to comment on blogs and feel that I wasn't getting anyone returning them. I know I'm getting readers from my pageviews but I also want to know who you are and what you thought of the post! Tweet me or get in touch another way if comments are too difficult to do.

I also feel like that we all work individually from isolated environments on our computer. We have to remember to go out and meet each other!

4. How do you cultivate community around your blog?
I make a point to respond to all of my comments. If someone asks a question, I try to answer them. I'll tweet them or email them if it requires more in depth response. Hopefully my readers appreciate my efforts!

5. If you could make one resolution to be a better community member what would it be?
Perhaps guest blog more often. I had some wonderful bloggers guest blog for me while I traveled during Easter. Would love to return the favor and help out some other bloggers. Hit me up!

What are your thoughts on the state of the blogging community?

  1. I have noticed the comments decreasing too. I try to respond to all of my comments even if it takes a few days. You always do a great job responding! Keep up the hard work!

    1. Yes you're very good at returning comments!

  2. Yeah, that can be a little frustrating too when you comment on other people's blogs and then don't return the favor at least once. Going out and meeting each other is something else we as bloggers should do more often.

btw: I'm always looking for guest bloggers, especially as this pregnancy moves farther along and I would love to have yah! :)

    1. I'd love to guest blog! Yes, it is very frustrating. I don't know if it's proper etiquette but I just stopped commenting on blogs that don't comment back. I feel like why am I going to make the effort if you're not, you know?

    1. Aw well you're definitely a great member of the blogging community. I'm not sure what the reasons are behind it but seems like it's affecting the community overall :(

  4. I'm feeling that at the moment as well. I feel disconnected personally because I haven't been able to dedicate much time recently but I also think I am not pushing as hard because the community seems to have waned a bit. Sad :(

  5. I totally agree. I've noticed commenting is down across the board - not just on my blog. I hope this isn't a sign that blogging is going out of style. I'm not sure what I'd do without it since it's been a part of my life for 4+ years.

    1. Oh really? I don't think blogging will go out of style. People are really passionate about it. I think it's just unfortunately gotten very flooded with "wannabes" or people seeking fame. They'll grow tired of it soon enough. Aww yeah I've dedicated 3 years and it's hard to imagine life without my blog :(

  6. This was a really good set of questions this week. It's gotten me thinking. I try to respond to comments as quickly as possible. Just a couple of years ago blogging really did feel like more of a community. There has been a change in the past year or so.

    1. Definitely! There definitely has. I understand it takes a lot of time and effort to comment but I think it's an important part of building community!

  7. Great post. I agree. What I have been feeling about teh blogging community is that it is more about getting followers than corresponding with your followers. I have taken a stance to only follow those sites that I thoroughly enjoy versus following because they are following me while I dont like any of their content. Makes no sense. So while I have my small following, I kow they are interested. So that could be a reason. People are just following just to get folowed back.

    1. Agree. I care more about the interaction than how many followers. Yeah, but I also feel bad if someone follows me and I don't follow but sometimes it's not a blog I want to read. I try to comment to show I appreciate their support. Hope they don't get bothered though.

    1. Oh perhaps new bloggers aren't noticing it. It helps when someone comments on my blog because then I can just click and jump over to your blog and comment :) I like that method!

    2. I haven't noticed a decline either and I've been blogging for about three years! Good for you for commenting on lots of blogs - I know I should be doing that more but it does take time.

  9. It drives me nuts when a particular post gets a really high view count, and then...no comments. Sigh.

  10. I value all the comments on my blog over and above numbers, since this is the reason I choose to write, the share fashion and ideas, and have fun with my blog. I do love the IFB but I need to get more involved with them. Britain has British Style Bloggers but they are in flux so not active much recently.... important points here!

    1. yeah IFB is hard to get involved in... you can submit to Links a la Mode but I find that comments don't go up, just readership :/ I thought British bloggers had their 'ish together better... at least from what I've seen on blogs!

  11. I left the longest comment ever on Katy's post on this. So I don't want to repeat myself, lol. But I will add that I'm very pro genuine interactions. I started a new very demanding job that I love but requires long hours and it's taken a lot of time away from me reading blogs and honestly I hate leaving the banal comment, so I literally troll until I see something that speaks to me either as super cute or super interesting that I want to comment on. But since I have less time for trolling I really have been commenting less because I want to maintain that kind of integrity in the way I comment. So that is my situation with community and I'm sure it reflects on the comments I receive, but honestly I'm not so bothered by it because I hope that the commenters (like yo'self homie) realize I really do appreciate every genuine comment and it's not that I don't want to read and comment stalk but I just have such little time. And when I do comment I mean it 100% and take the time to read your words. K, also this is a lot longer than I thought...but if you have any interest in reading more you can hope over to Katy's blog b/c I wrote a novel there!
