Movie Review: My Week With Marilyn

I've been wanting to see this movie for awhile now and finally was able to last night. And I have to say I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Michelle Williams was great - I think she pulled off a fantastic Marilyn! However, I was not that impressed with the supporting cast. Her young love interest, Colin Clark, was played by a newcomer Eddie Redmayne. I was not inspired by him at all.

The movie is based on a book the real Colin Clark wrote about working on the production of Sir Laurence Olivier's film "The Prince and the Showgirl." With this in mind, I expected the movie to be more from his point of view. I would have expected Marilyn to be a little more elusive, something he wanted but couldn't have. However, she was very present and a major role. The film didn't make me feel like he was so madly in love with her rather it was just a school boy crush. Perhaps I went into it with the wrong idea.

It also felt way longer than an hour and 40 minutes. It may have been because it was after work and I was tired. But I'm pretty sure it was more because the movie dragged along with some boring characters. Ms. Williams really had to hold the movie together herself.

I think you could really wait for Netfix to watch this movie. Otherwise, go in expecting to see Michelle Williams be spectacular and the rest of the cast be lackluster.

  1. My husband and I both didn't really like the way they portrayed Marilyn. She was just a beautiful woman, rather than an in depth character.

  2. I was thinking about going to see this movie but I think I will wait to see it on Netflix.

  3. Oh no! I was really hoping for this one to be good. Oh well. At least if I see it now, I won't go in with high expectations.

  4. I had been wanting to watch this movie, but after your review I think I will wait for Netflix. Thanks!

  5. I saw a quick preview of this movie on tv, and to be honest it didn't really catch my attention. I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed!

  6. Shame to hear it was a let down. I was really looking forward to it.
And such a shame that Eddie Redmayne isn't good in it. He's been great in all the other things I've seen him in...and is so gorgeous.

  7. I absolutely loved this movie actually. I'm sorry to hear you didn't like it. You can read my post about it and the positive role Marilyn was for women on my blog today.

  8. Ooh thanks for the info. I wanted to see this but I'll Netflix it. I used to be obsessed with Marilyn in college. I did a paper on the conspiracy theory that the Kennedys were connected to her death. I'm still all about it, just calmed down a bit ;)

  9. @Rebecca- Agreed!

@downtownchicagobarbie- Let me know what you think when you do see it, I've heard other people rave about it

@Marissa- haha it's just one woman's word, maybe you'll get a different feeling?

@Fashion by Alicia - Let me know your thoughts once you do see it!

@Kirstin Marie - Oh it caught my attention and I've been looking forward to it. I heard it was Michelle Williams' best performance blah blah but was not that impressed

@Sherin - Aw well maybe you'll like it better? I've never heard of him, what else was he in? I might need to check them out b/c I didn't think he was anything special

@Jamie - Hey, to each their own! hehe

@Leeann- lmao loved our Twitter chat ;)
