Weekend Recap: Christmas in Cali

This will be less of a 'weekend recap' and more of a 'week recap' as I just traveled to California for the holidays to visit my sister and her family. Christmas morning my nephews came over to unwrap presents from Santa. Jacob, who is 4, is obsessed with Ninjago (which if you don't know are legos) so the adults spent the entire day putting together over 2,000 lego pieces. Lucky kid!

The Year of the Nerds

Image via
Every year should be the year of the nerds in my opinion but 2012 they really shined. It was more the year when people became more aware of what was going on in society and stood up. "Educated citizens" if you will. We saw a movement from praising the jock types and have a bit of "Revenge of the Nerds" moment where Americans sought out answers and those providing them were those who had facts (and numbers) and were not corrupted by Washington or money.

Merry Christmas!

Source: alllthecolors.tumblr.com via FACTORY PR on Pinterest
No matter how old I get, I still get butterflies on Christmas morning. It's still exciting to run downstairs and see gifts all wrapped under the tree. Now I have nephews (ages 4 and almost 2) so I can share in their excitement as they tear the paper off. However, I still annoy my brother because I unwrap my gifts slowly as to appreciate them but I'm always the last one to finish unwrapping gifts. So now my mom has changed the tradition to we HAVE to eat breakfast before opening gifts. We make my Dad's dad recipe for Belgian waffles (so good... I look forward to them all year!). My mom already created a schedule:

I'm Going, Going Back to Cali

Today I'm flying back to Cali for Christmas (which always makes LL Cool J's song pop in my head). Christmas in California never feels right for me. I like a white Christmas or at least below 60 degree temperatures so I can wear oversized sweaters and drink cocoa. But I have to go where the family goes.

My Favorite Posts of 2012

2012 is ending in 9 days so I thought it would be a good time to reflect. I've written quite a few posts this year and even surpassed my 1,000th post benchmark so wanted to highlight some of my favorite posts from 2012 and maybe you can add yours in the comments:

9 Holiday Nail Art Ideas

I've done quite a few Christmas inspired manicures so figured it was that time of the year to round them up. Fun fact: #5 was featured on MSN Living recently! And now for #9 and what I'm currently wearing on my nails:

My December GLOSSYBOX

Movie Review: "Breaking the Taboo"

Image via

Recently Richard Branson was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and he mentioned his son was releasing a movie for free on YouTube called "Breaking the Taboo" about the drug war. I thought it was awesome that they were releasing the film for free in it's entirety for people to learn more so I went and checked it out. It's an hour long and features big hitters like Bill Clinton and former presidents of the major drug countries such as Colombia. It's narrated by Morgan Freeman (is there any other narrators? March of the Penguins people!).

Weekend Recap: It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

Friday: My aunt came into the city from New Jersey to see the tree and to celebrate my big news. We looked at the windows at Saks and did some window shopping along 5th Avenue. We also mailed my Christmas gifts to my family in California so I don't have to carry them on the plane with me. I get so many beauty boxes that I love the holidays so I can reuse them. Pretty much all the gifts pictured above were decorated with recycled items or items from past beauty boxes (except the Sur La Table gift card).

Book Review: "Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris" by Jennifer L. Scott

Image via

Going to Paris is a dream of mine. I made it a goal to pay for my own trip before I turn 30... time is running out! Reading Jennifer's book "20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris" I felt was a great way to get introduced to the French culture. I know that there are many cultural differences between Americans and the French but this book pointed out a few that I was not aware of.

Gold Tips for #Tinseltown

Last night I headed out to a Refinery29 event with Nicole of StyleMe BAD and Laura of Blush and Beakers in SoHo. But before heading there we grabbed some dinner at Toby's Public House to have a mini celebration of my NYU acceptance.

Movie Review: HBO's "In Vogue: The Editor's Eye" Documentary

Image via
HBO has done it again! On Thursday they aired a documentary focused on the great editor's behind Vogue magazine titled "In Vogue: The Editor's Eye." I loved About Face which aired in August and focused on legendary models. Now HBO takes us behind the scenes of went in to creating some of the most memorable and iconic fashion images produced in Vogue. It featured interviews with current Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour; fashion editors such as Grace Coddington, Tonne Goodman, Polly Allen Mellen, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Camilla Nickerson, Phyllis Posnick and Babs Simpson.

Taking My New Winter Coat For A Spin At Penn Station

Aka the most awkward blogger photo shoot! I met up with Nicole of Style Me BAD and Laura of Blush and Beakers to host our #fashionistagiftguide Twitter party and thought it would be a great night to take my new coat for a spin. New Yorkers needed a trusty coat for those East Coast winters; a chic coat style to wear all year round is the trenchcoat. You can get a lighter cotton one for the spring and a bulky, wool one for the winter.

Book Club Swap

Image via
I usually participate in Book Club Friday and a couple of weeks ago they posted a book swap. Being the book nerd I am, I signed up! I was paired with Kristyn of Chits and Giggles. We exchanged emails about our preferences. I had no idea how to explain what books I like: liberal, political, progressive, comedies, non-fiction? After discussing potential books to swap, we decided just to buy each other books that were on our wish lists. She sweetly purchased a book I've been dying to read but just haven't found the time to: "Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy" by Christopher Hayes. Now I just need to set aside a weekend to read this highly praised book. Thanks Kristyn!

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Crown Jewels

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Crown Jewels

While watching Nicole Richie on NBC's Fashion Star, I was dying over the headpieces she wore. It's quite a bold choice so I wasn't sure I could pull it off but now it's becoming more popular (and more accepted) so I think I'm ready to rock this trend! I purchased one from Send the Trend similar to the NastyGal one that's a bit more understated (sorry couldn't find it on the site anymore) but you could go a bit bolder as long as you kept your hair simple.

Movie Review: Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap

Image via

Over the weekend I finally got around to watching my Netflix DVDs and one of them was "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap" directed and produced by Ice T. He said he had to make this movie because rapping isn't just about money and the woman, it takes skill. He traveled to all the historic rap scenes from the South Bronx to Compton to talk to the masters about their craft.

Add A Personal Touch With Poetry Salon This Holiday Season

My holiday GLOSSYBOX was called Tis The Season To Be Glossy. I was pretty impressed with this box as I received 3 full sized samples! Here's what I received:

Mani of the Week: Winter Wonderland

Original Image Source: vintagerosewinterwonderland.tumblr.com via FACTORY PR on Pinterest

I was inspired by the recent snowfall we had here in New York (although it wasn't as pretty as the picture above). I wanted to create snowfall looking nail design. While looking for another pale blue color, I discovered this Julep color in my collection. You know you have too many nail polishes when you find colors you didn't even realize you had and go "when did I get this?" I'm glad I did because it's gorgeous and exactly the color I was looking for. I simply layered two glitter top coats from Essie and OPI.

What's New In My Closet

What's New In My Closet

While I didn't get to do much shopping while visiting my folks in California over the holiday since we all came down with the flu. My mom did pick me up some great new items. Can you say peplum?! She used to wait to have me shop to pick out what I wanted for Christmas since I have "discerning" taste but I think she has a firm handle on what I like now as evidence by this mini haul. Let's break it down...

How to Wear Tights in the Winter

I received two pairs of No nonsense tights and leggings and I thought they best way to show off these affordable options were to wear them from day to night. Since so many gals are still committing the "pants aren't leggings" faux pas, I wanted to show the "proper" way to wear them.

Sweater dress: Kid's section at Target; No nonsense Corduroy Leggings in apple red; Shearling booties via Zappos; Chain link bracelet via Send the Trend

My First Beauty Army Kit

One good thing that came out of flying a red eye with the stomach flu was coming home to my beauty boxes! I was especially excited about my first Beauty Army kit as I've heard good things. They also exclusively carry one of my favorites - Grand Central Beauty. It works a little differently than the other beauty boxes because you get to pick your samples based on the beauty profile you fill out. You get to select 6 out of the 9 they give to you for $12. I think it's a great option for those who want a more personalized beauty subscription box each month with some flexibility. But I most point out their fantastic customer service!

The Faux Thanksgiving That Almost Didn't Happen

There once was a family
Who lived in a big ol' house.
They liked to get together for Thanksgiving
Because isn't that what it's all about?
They came from far and near,
To celebrate what they coined Faux Thanksgiving.
Its the same as any turkey day
With good food, laughter and cheer.
Well I'm sad to say
It almost didn't happen this year.

Guest Post: 4 DIY Hostess Gifts for the Holidays by A Pretty Nest

Original image via

I'm Marie-Eve and I blog over at A Pretty Nest. I blog about fashion and fun DIY projects. And since American Thanksgiving just passed (I'm Canadian!), I decided to show you some fun and easy DIY project that would make great gift for hostess on Thanksgiving and over the holidays.

The holidays can get expensive and that is why I love to give handmade gifts. It's less expensive and usually more appreciated. You can have crafty skills, or none at all, it doesn't matter!

2012 Fashionista Holiday Gift Guide

So excited to finally reveal the project that Nicole of Style Me BAD, Laura of Blush & Beakers and I have been working so hard on the past several weeks - the 2012 Fashionista Gift Guide! We wanted to make it as authentic as possible featuring only products that we have personally tried and love. Inside you'll find affordable accessories, gorgeous hand crafted pieces, beauty on the go and some all-natural products that are sure to please any fashionista this holiday season. Be sure to flip all the way through and keep an eye out for some special deals as well! It will be up on all of our blogs until the end of December so you can use it a reference while you do your holiday shopping (and maybe pick something up for yourself since you deserve it).

Mani of the Week: Border Nails

A big trend in nail art is border nails right now. I've been wanting to try it but knew it would require a lot of patience. I did a search on YouTube and there were lots of different methods. I made my own version using Aquaphor around my nails and drawing the border by hand. I used the 2 Essie colors that I thought would go together for Thanksgiving: hunter green and gold - both Klout perks!

Guest Post: How to Deal With Thanksgiving When Dating by Eleanore Wells

Original image via
Today's guest post comes from Eleanore Wells of 'The Spinsterlicious Life.'

I love Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday. It’s a kick-off to the holiday season (Halloween doesn’t count), and the best holiday, as far as I’m concerned. Everyone celebrates it and there aren’t a lot of rules: eat well, enjoy each other’s company, pack up some leftovers. But if you’re single-and-dating, Thanksgiving may also be the kick-off to a “what are we doing” conversation.

Weekend Recap: Projects & A Sigh of Relief

bom bom jewelry Private Holiday Shopping Event With Fashionista NY Girl

Last night I went out to support my fellow blogger buddy Heather of Fashionista NY Girl while she hosted a private shopping event with bom bom jewelry. It was held at an intimate pop-up shop next to the Roger Smith Hotel. The champagne was flowing and yummy chocolates were in abundance. And there was plenty of gorgeous jewelry to try on!

Mani of the Week: Cat Eyes

This is a throwback mani. In the beginning stages of my nail art addiction, I used to do this manicure with a line down the middle. I thought it looked a lot like cat eyes. Not sure if there's a real name for this look. Decided to use my go to black from Wet 'n Wild and the Essie gold nail polish I got from Klout. Love the color combo of black and gold - very gilded!

My November Birchbox

This month's Birchbox was in celebration of Thanksgiving: giving thanks, giving back, and giving treats. They partnered this month with The Art of Elysium, a non-profit that encourages actors, artists, and musicians to dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. What an awesome cause and they have curated celebrity picks for you to shop. But back to the box...

Review: Aussie Miraculously Smooth Shampoo & Conditioner

I received Aussie's Miraculously Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner in my PG Beauty Klout perk. "Seriously silky smooth for wildly frizzy manes" says their website. The collection is infused with Australian botanicals, adds moisture to rough manes-without weighing them down-for sleek, silky, well-styled locks. During the winter, my hair dries out and tends to be more frizzy than usual. I like to use Aussie's 3-Minute Miracle to give it a quick moisture boost. I was excited to try these products since I am an Aussie fan already. Both cost around $4 for a 13.5 fl oz bottle.

What I'm Selling on @Threadflip

There are tons of options for selling your clothes online but the place I've had the best success is Threadflip. Threadflip is a newly launched startup based in California. My general rule is if I haven't worn it in a year, then get rid of it. However, some of these items were barely used and deserved loving homes. Some items I grew out of (damn hips!) so it's not because I don't like them. Here are some of my favorites:

Trend I'm Currently Craving: Leather Details

Leather Details

Well I've been craving this trend for quite some time actually. However, I've finally incorporated some pieces into my wardrobe! I think if you're not ready to fully commit to a leather piece then finding a piece with leather details is the way to go. You can go with something subtle like these Ecru pants or get full on sleeves like this jacket from PacSun. I would go with any kind of leather detail quite frankly.
