InStyle Makeover's 50 Best Fashion Tips

Rachel Bilson on the cover

Since I subscribe to InStyle, I receive InStyle Makeover which comes seasonly. For the Fall 2011 issue they had an article "The 50 Best Fashion Tips of All Time!" Here are the ones I thought worthy of sharing:

1. You must own at least one classic white button-up. Definitely agree - can be dressed down or up.

2. Accessorize in brights. I don't think I've ever heard this advice but I'm all for it!

5. Hem your pants to a specific shoe height. I do this especially since I typically have to hem almost all of my pants. However, don't wear pants you left long for heels with flats because they'll drag and get frayed bottoms. Not a cute look.

9. Consider the wear and care. Yes! I can't tell how frustrating it is to find out something is dry clean only.

10. Embrace your shape. Ladies, why do we refuse to do this? Stacey and Clinton reinforced this so many times on What Not to Wear. "Wear what fits your body now, not what you want your body to be." Wearing clothes that don't fit can make you look bigger. There are plenty of ways to hide "problem areas" but don't squeeze into jeans!

11. Make a list before you shop. I started reading about this idea in the blogosphere. I usually go with an idea but then I feel like I never find what's in my head. However, shopping aimlessly typically does lead you to spend more versus if you shop for a specific thing in mind.

15. Edit your closet. I try to do this right before Fall and right before Summer. I donate clothes that no longer fit or that I just never ended up wearing to Goodwill.

21. When wearing white try it out in light. This can also apply to black. You should really check to see how sheer it is before wearing it to avoid any mishaps.

25. Own at least one thing that is leopard. I like this advice!

27. Conquer your fear of color. Yes! I need to work on this especially in the winter.

33. Master menswear. If you've read my blog long enough, you'll know I'm a huge fan of menswear on women.

39. If you have a limited budget, spend it on accessories. I learned this when I was a broke college kid.

41. Pair loose with tight. This is a great method for proportions. If you are wearing jeggings then it's best to pair it with a loose fitting top.

48. Dress for your body, not your age. Just because you are 50, doesn't mean you have to look frumpy. But you should also be aware of wearing too young of styles as well.

What are some of the best fashion tips you've received?

  3. Some great tips, I definitely need some leopard. Definitely agree about the hemming trousers. I have to take all mine up and tend to wear my jeans slightly longer in winter with heeled boots than summer with sandals and flipflops.
