FBFF: You May Say I'm A Dreamer

This month Katy has been inspired by bloggers who quit their day job and start on the path to self-employment doing what they love to do. If you haven't read Sally from Already Pretty's post on this rush over and do it now. We all have dreams, goals, aspirations. Putting them down on paper is often the first step to realizing those dreams.

1. Fess up - if you could do anything professionally what would it be?
I grew up wanting to be an editor at Elle magazine. I've always had an opinion about fashion, I would "kindly" tell my family members and friends what they should or shouldn't be wearing. That is why I studied fashion in college. However, dreams can shift and change. I think Conan O'Brien is a good example of this. He dreamed of hosting the Tonight Show for 20 years but unfortunately things to work out but he got to do a dream he never knew he had, his road tour. My new dream wasn't in existence 5 years ago. The publishing industry was crumbling when I graduated in 2009. However, the digital media space was every expanding. Twitter wasn't around when I was in college (and Facebook was just for college kids!) so I decided to go back to school and take some classes at NYU on the subject. It has been a thrill! Now my professional goal would be working with great, passionate people and tweeting (lol!).

2. What draws you to this?
I've always been drawn to fashion because it's a form of self-expression. I also have a keen eye to say "in" or "out." I think those skills can be attributed to social media. Twitter is a great way to express yourself but you also need an editor mentality to limit your tweet to 140 characters. I also love the connections you can make on Twitter!

3. When did you first start dreaming about this ideal?
Oh man, I've dreamed about this for a long time. I even created my own fashion magazine when I was in middle school. My new digital media dream sprung up about two years ago.

4. What's holding you back from going all in?
I feel that I have gone all in. I am freelancing as a social media consultant until I get a position with a larger agency. Unfortunately, I feel it's out of my hands with the economy. For now, all I can do is keep doing what I love and gain as much experience as I can.

5. Sometimes the first step is the hardest... what's one step you can take now on the way to realizing your dream?
Just keep being passionate!

What are your dreams/aspirations?

  1. I really admire you for going all in and pursuing your passion as a social media consultant (and you created your own fashion magazine in Middle School! How fun is that!). I've found that it takes a lot of courage to take that first step and go all in, but once you do there is no turning back! :)

  2. I thought about going this track for a while while I was building up my freelancing clients. Social media is so exciting and innovative and so many companies are behind the times and need help with how to operate these things to the best of their ability. Its a needed profession, that's for sure. - Katy
