Don't Call Me Straight Edge

via We Heart It

A few weeks back there was an FBFF topic about labels. There are labels outside of blogging that we all deal with. One I come across frequently is "Oh, you are straight edge" when people find out I don't drink (or smoke or do drugs). Uh, no. I don't drink because I don't like it. I can't stand the smell at all. I don't do it to be part of some lifestyle. I don't hang out with other straight edge people, in fact, most of my friends drink. I've even dated potheads. I'm not judging your decisions.

Those who label themselves straight edge, I feel like only do it to be part of a culture or a niche. They need to feel accepted. I'm glad they are trying to make it a cool facade but even browsing the We Heart It images... I was annoyed. I didn't consciously decide to not drink, smoke, or do drugs. None of them interest me and I can't stand cigarettes! I don't do it to make someone feel "uncool" or out of place, which is what most straight edge people do. I don't think that is the right solution to get your friend to not smoke. I prefer rational explanations but hey, that's just me.

Neil deGrasse Tyson (look him up!) made a great point on Citizen Radio about labels. He says he doesn't believe in labels because it keeps people from having conversations. If you label yourself something then someone assumes something about you and won't engage. Great point! If I label myself straight edge then people won't really ask questions. They'll just go okay don't talk about drinking to Kim. It's funny to see people's reactions when they find out I don't drink because most usually feel some guilt or shame wash over them, "I don't drink all the time." I don't care! Honestly, live your life and have your fun. I just know I can have my fun without those things.

What label do you dislike the most?

  1. So true. I can't stand labels either!! I don't really drink etc, but don't think I could call myself straight edge.

  2. Straight Edge people are vegetarians too, and listen to hardcore punk music, it's not just being abstemious :) and people who really believe in not drinking, taking drugs and being vegetarians, doesn't like that label...
