Book Review: "Be Your Own Best Publicist" By Jessica Kleiman & Meryl Weinsaft Cooper

I just finished Be Your Own Best Publicist: How to Use PR Techniques to Get Noticed, Hired, and Rewarded at Work and found it full of information. A friend recommended this book to me. She thought it would be helpful as a blogger who is the face of my company. P.S. If you ever see me at an event, please come up to me because I'm really shy! The book is also helpful for those job hunting (like myself).

There was a chapter on having personal style and the experts suggest having a "signature style" like Anna Wintour's bob and glasses. I thought this was very interesting. I wonder if spikes and skulls can be a signature (lol!)?

There was an entire chapter devoted to social media, which is so important. One interesting point they mention is that now more than ever it's easier to size up your competition. So much is available through social media. Look up what they are saying and what they are sharing on LinkedIn and find out what makes you different.

One of the great things about PR is that it encourages people to be different. Public relations is such a creative field! There was a quote from Peter Shankman "We can't learn to be creative until we accept the fact that we can fail. Every failure has a seed of lesson." So true and I have to constantly remind myself of that.

I know I'll be keeping this as a guidebook during my job search and will refer to it throughout my career.
