Guest Post: Young, Gifted & Black – 6 Designers to Watch

LaQuan Smith with Tyra
*Today's guest post comes from LoveBrownSugar! She knows about so many up and coming designers so I thought it would be great if she shared her knowledge with us all.

In celebration of Black History Month and the industry-appointed month of fashion called February, here’s a look at six up and coming black designers you should know.

LaQuan Smith

Endorsed by fashion greats like Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley, LaQuan Smith is on the fast track to becoming a household name. The 22 year old Queens, NY native got his start whipping together pieces on his grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine. With a natural talent for creating body-conscious silhouettes in figure-flattering fabrics, LaQuan has claimed editorial features in publications like VOGUE, Marie Claire, UPTOWN Magazine and more. http://www.laquansmith.com/

Domonique Auxilly

Up and coming designer Domonique Auxilly might not have the mega-exposure that some other rising design stars have but she absolutely has the talent. Donned by pop culture stars and socialites alike (i.e Dawn Richard, Nicki Minaj, Angela Simmons and more), her Dauxilly collections mix sultry silhouettes and detailed construction for the daring girl with good taste. Check her out at www.dauxilly.com.

Coco & Breezy

These young and hip accessory designers may have developed an affinity for shades through childhood experience being outcasts in their native hometown of Minnesota, but they have nothing to hide from now. An edgy street-smart design duo, Coco & Breezy stepped onto the NYC scene as accessory designers and downtown socialites in 2009 and their brand has been going stronger and stronger ever since. Known for making accessories, less for utility and more for self-expression and art, these two have developed a cult following with the underground hipster crowd who loyally rock their studded, heavy metal frames with pride. Seen on the likes of stars like Alicia Keys, Solange Knowles and mega-starlet Beyonce, Maya’s pieces capture the essence of culture and couture. Laura Smalls

Making her debut in Fall 2009, Parsons graduate Laura Smalls has been on the fast track since her premiere. Now going into her 5th season as a luxury designer, Laura Smalls is a name to get familiar with. Also tapped as a rising star, by fashion great Andre Leon Talley, Smalls is actually the goddaughter of jazz legend and singer/songwriter Billie Holliday. Taking much of her inspiration from ‘40’s and ‘50’s fashion, the mother of three designs elegant pieces fit for the first lady and beyond. www.laurasmalls.com
