Best & Worst Dressed at the Golden Globes

Last night was the 68th Annual Golden Globes hosted by Ricky Gervais. There was a pretty good fashion plate, thankfully. This year I decided to break it down by trend. Here we go:
No VS here!
Sequins. Anne Hathaway's Armani Prive dress is gorgeous, so glad she paired it with a simple down 'do (I was sick of all the updo's!) and the back was super revealing so she wasn't too covered up. Olivia Wilde was fierce in Marchesa. I'm growing quite fond of her red carpet style. Both these ladies get a best dressed vote for me.
When in doubt wear red. Who says red heads can't wear red? Well two did last night. Except Christina Hendricks in Romona Keveza I think pulled it off better although the flowers were too much by her face. Julianne Moore's Lanvin dress is confusing (it also photographed very pink)! Why the sleeve? I think January Jones look va va voom in this red Versace cut-out dress. I wasn't a fan of Sofia Vergara's Vera Wang dress either but it is an improvement for her.
Best: January Jones Worst: Julianne Moore

Green with envy. I was quite happy to see green on the carpet this year. More of it ladies! Catherine Zeta Jones was stunning in Monique Lhuillier. This is how you own the red carpet! I think all the ladies looked great in the green. Elisabeth Moss definitely improved in this Donna Karan number, but still didn't quite nail it. Angelina in Versace Atelier is of course gorgeous. I was a little bored with Mila Kunis in Vera Wang and I was annoyed she wore a bun because she was in ballerina movie!
Best: Catherine Zeta Jones Worst: Elisabeth Moss

Lady pink. An unexpected color on the red carpet this year was pink (at least to me). I thought Lea Michele's Ocar de la Renta pink dress was the best and Claire Danes' Calvin Klein dress was a bit pepto bismol. I do applaud her for wearing a bright color though. And whoa Megan Fox. This Armani dress is definitely not her usual style for the red carpet, very prom.
Best: Lea Michele Worst: Megan Fox

Shades of orange. I like the burnt orange color Kyra Sedgwick wore in this Emilio Pucci dress. She does not age! Another person who wore a bright color who I would say is one of my favorites of the night is Emma Stone who was also wearing Calvin Klein. And the former Mrs. Billy Joel, Katie Lee looked awful in this dress.
Best: Emma Stone Worst: Katie Lee

Sorry I had to cut off the trains!
Dark night. There was a lot of black and navy on the red carpet. The girl from Coyote Ugly really has come along way, Piper Perabo (far left top). She looked gorgeous in Oscar de la Renta. Tina Fey bored me in L'Wren Scott, she needs to wear more color! Amy Adams redeemed herself in this Marchesa dress. Jennifer Lawrence (who?) took a risk in this Louis Vuitton dress, but I don't think it worked (far left bottom). Julia Stiles was cute on top in this Romona Keveza gown but the bottom wasn't flattering. Jayma Mays from Glee looked sexy, but I don't think she quite has the body for this Alberta Ferretti dress. What is Halle Berry thinking in this Nina Ricci dress?! I thought it looked like lingerie. Sort of inappropriate.
Best: Piper Perabo Worst: Halle Berry (didn't want to do it!)

Bridal white. I often find that white on the red carpet can be too bridal. However, 14-year old Halie Steinfeld of "True Grit" looked great in Prabal Gurung. Some of you may disagree with me but I loved Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander. It is completely her (no makeup, unique style). I kind of wished she went further with it and worn a full suit. Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad was so nun like. Why is she wearing a shawl? So old lady, even Helen Mirren's shawl showed more skin! Jennifer Love Hewitt was invited (somehow) and looked like she was ready the walk the aisle in Romona Keveza.
Best: Halie Steinfeld Worst: Jennifer Love Hewitt (by a bad spray tan)
Flesh tone. I was so bored with all the nude colors. Michelle Williams does have a 60s, hippie style so I didn't think this Valentino dress was dreadful for her. She was the second person I wanted to see most, but I wasn't as badly let down as I was with Natalie Portman. Dianna Agron of Glee wore J. Mendel and is gorgeous we all know that but can she stop wearing princess dresses? At least Lea Michele tries bold dresses. Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory is adorable but her red carpet style hasn't fully developed. She wore this tiered Catherine Kidd dress. My girl Leighton Meester took a risk in this Burberry Porsum dress but I didn't like it. I'm sorry but Carrie Underwood doesn't get fashion. Moving on... Sarah Hyland needs to teach Miley how to dress. She looks age appropriate in this Max Azria Atelier dress. Nicole Kidman looks washed out in Prada.
Best: Sarah Hyland Worst: Nicole Kidman (she should know better)

Baby bump. The hottest accessory for the red carpet this year was the baby bump. The person I wanted to see most on the red carpet last night was Natalie Portman. I was SO let down by her Viktor & Rolff pink dress. I never thought I'd say Jane Krakowski would be better dressed than Natalie Portman, but pregnancy really suits Jane in this Badgley Mischka dress. But of course, the best dressed baby bump goes to Rachel Zoe. I didn't even see her until the after party on E!. She's wearing Balmain. I'm happy to see her with her hair up and not with her typical RZ hair.
Best: Rachel Zoe Worst: Natalie Portman (it kills me!)

Divorce wasn't kind. Reese nailed the post divorce look a few years ago at the Globes, these ladies should have taken note. Sandra would've looked better with Olivia Wilde type bangs. Sandra's Jenny Packham dress swallows her (could she look more bored to be there?!). ScarJo's Elie Saab dress was pretty but the hair was what everyone called "bride of Frankenstein." I'm sick of seeing Eva in black. Yes, her body looks slamming in Zac Posen but I'm bored. No one gets a best dressed vote for me.

Who were your Best and Worst dressed of the night?

  1. Hello Kimberlee! I see we were both inspired to write about the fashion from the Golden Globes. I really enjoy your take of things, especially the break down by trend and color.

I agree with you: the nudes bore me but several of them wore them to great effect.

I didn't care for Portman's Viktor & Rolf or Michele Wms' Valentine although I have great respect for these ladies talents and style. Perhaps it was just an off night.

My fave was the green Jolie dress, I felt she did movie star well last night.

Thank you for your comment on my blog by the way. It's nice to "meet" you! -Bella Q
